Who does NOT train Tri's w/ Chest?

Prime Rib

New member
I am changing around my routine because I do not think I am getting the most out of my Tri's. I have always been a firm believer in doing Tri's on the same day as chest, but doing so prohibits the amount of weight on the tri's. I am going to try a change and put Tri's on Bi's day, which is the day directly after Chest. I train every muscle group twice a week except back. Any input or opinions is appreciated. I am mainly concerned in trying to not overtrain the tri's, however i've talked to a bunch of guys and several say doing tri's on a different day is best. Opinions?? TIA

It's always good to change things around. Maybe you can do triceps together with biceps in one day.... or maybe do them with shoulders....

I train my tri's along with chest and biceps.

I do chest first, then biceps........so by the time i get to triceps, they have had a good 15 minute rest after the chest work. They may not be fresh, but they are as good as.

Iv'e tried both, and got absolutely no results when I trained tris after chest or bis after back. I get much better results giving them their own heavy day

You get crappy results if you train tris the same day as chest.

I give arms their own day... anything less gives you mediocre arms.

I like training tri's with bi's the best. If I did them with chest one or the other would suffer to much depending on what I did first.

I always rest 1 day before working my arms, if you do chest or shoulder you are going to hit your triceps, and when you work your back it's your biceps....

I say to each their own, find out what works for you. I have got results both ways (currently use separate days, but have used the same day, and will again) and have seen many others use both to great success. It is going to depend on your personal circumstances and making sure you adjust your training to suit.

Some say they can’t hit tris hard after Chest, but that’s because they are pre exhausted so you cant expect to be lifting the same weight. Does the most weight = most gains? I’m not sure, but if so, why does anyone do more than one set per bodypart? You cant possibly use max on every set? Also, in this situation, you need to drop the volume to avoid overtraining.

Training each on separate days will let you use more weight, and more volume if you think that is desirable. However, some find they over train tris if they are effectively hitting them hard on chest day and tri day.

I always had a hard time trainging tris on a seperate day due to difficulty warming up my tris.... but seeing all the people here who do it the other way and the results they have gotten, I think I will switch soon.....

Does anyone have any thoughts as to not working them together in a non-BB workout? (such as WS style-I know most of the people who have commented are more BB style)

I train chest and tris separate as well. In fact, triceps get a day all to themselves :) For my next training cycle, I'll be doing benching/chest on Wednesday and doing board presses/triceps on Saturday. Once I gave tris a day of their own, my strength increased greatly, and I gained size in them.

bigguns15- alright then, I will be changing immediately, seems I have been an idiot my whole life... though my pecs seem to be developed equal to the strength, my tris development has always lagged (strong but small)... so many years wasted!

Hey, we're all learning here. I spent years training that way. In fact, when I first began I was on a University powerlifting team. We really didn't do any accessory work at all. So, I probably went 2 years without working my triceps at all except for bench pressing. Try not to think about anything as being wasted. Let us know how changing your routine works out for you :)

I think making slow additions of varying set/rep schemes and new exercises is best. Keep things gradual, and be patient. Keep your body guessing and never allow it to plateau.

I'm sorry but this could not be farther from the truth.

What builds mass? Big compound movements. How does devoting an entire day to a tiny muscle group like arms help to achieve the overall goal of bigger mass?

I've heard people say "Concentrate on gaining mass, arm size will follow." Yet then they go around and recommend that arms get their own day. Doesn't that seem a little silly?

I have to agree with Sofa on this one. I've tried more than once hitting arms after either back or chest, and each time I got absolutely nothing out of it. But when I do them on their own day, focusing on heavy free weight exercises, close grip bench, weighted dips, standing barbell curls, thats when my arms grow. Different strokes for different folks, but if you say the pics I just posted you can see that its worked for my arms

Since my surgery I have trained biceps with chest, and tri's with back, just to give my bicep a break. But this week I have started training bi's and tri's together on their own seperate day. I am hoping that this will help rebuild the strength in my left arm. :smash:

Well when you look at everything within the context of some once/week split routine then yeah it makes sense to give arms their own day. If someone forced me to work out like that then that's how I'd do it.

What I'm thinking though is that if you pair tris/chest and bis/back then you can do it more times per week which means more growth.

You have a point there casual...

I usually do chest/shoulders/tris day (Tues-ME/Sat-DE) then a legs/back day (Mon-DE, Thurs-ME), each twice a week...(honestly I only do bi's if I think of them, which is sporadic at best)

again more of a wsb/performance type set up (honestly I only do bi's if I think of them, which is sporadic at best)

any ideas from some of you out there how to work this out, WITHOUT hitting the gym everyday? (I do four days a week now)
usually I would say arms just kind of get lost in the mix, thow in some close grips and some skullcrushers in on the chest days now.....

this could jack up my whole program.....

What happens when the real world meets theories?

:eyes:

Okay, then. Let's see a couple "real world" results of not giving arms their own day:

Don't forget to include just about every powerlifter or strongman you see, who as a whole are much more massive than most bodybuilders. What about Kaz?

I guess you have to be a cyberpump member.

I found a thumbnail:
