this is the first plan

I average one day off a week with this one

day 1----run 3miles
day 2----run 3miles
day 3----lift

repeat

or

day 1----run 5-6 miles
day 2----lift
day 3----off

reapeat

on the seocnd one there is more intensity, but also more recovery, where in the first one there is more frequency, but less intensity....

which one would you do?

Why don't you try each one for a week and see which one you feel more comfortable with.... I'm sure running 6 miles is going to start to make your body produce cortisol.. which will make you slightly catabolic...
I'd see how your body reacts and make a decision based on how you feel.

you need more time than a week on each one to really evaluate progress.

How long does it take you to run 5-6 miles? If you are trying to build muscle mass, I would hold your cardio to under 45 minutes. If you are more concerned with getting lean, then I personally feel 5-6 mile runs will be more effective, but also more inhibiting on muscle growth. For me personally, the best compromise seems to come from weight training 3 days a week, and 30-45 minutes of cardio 3 days a week (on the non-lifting days). If you follow the periodization principle with the weight training, and fine tune your diet (IMHO, the most important thing you can do), then you should grow and get leaner at a healthy and steady rate.

BTW (not that anyone cares, but I'm so damn happy I have to post this anyway!), I've been doing 5x5 training for the last six weeks and have made my best progress since I started lifting! Over 50 lbs. improvement on my squats, 35 lbs. on my bench press, with similar results on all my other lifts. Damn making progress feels good! 5x5's are my plateau buster from now on!

Excellent...I'm compiling a short list of techniques to shock my body when things start to get stale. I'll add 5x5s.
