Which Birth Control Pills Do You Prefer?

My wife is planning on starting Birth Control. She is nervous about weight gain and emotional effects from the hormonal fluctuations that can come with them. I must admit, I don't know a damn thing about these. She will be consulting with a doc, and I know individuals differ, I just want to get a little background on these, so I can help her out. I don't trust doc's opinions alone, I have delt with too many that are absolutely clueless. So, as a birth control newbie, what are the good ones?

Thanks,

there have been many recent threads on here about this. u can try doing a search.....ill see if i can bump a couple for u.

Yeah, check out my thread I posted a week ago.

The one my doc said most women gain weight with is Ortho Tri-Cyclen........I didn't, but then again, I have a metabolism faster then the Road Runner!:lmao:

OK cool, I didn't think this would be discussed much here for whatever reason. I'll be searching. Thanks ladies.

Birth control pills

I currently use marvelon 28. I never have any weight gain or hormonal fluctuations since using the birth control pill, and I have been using for over 6 years. I take right through dieting for competition and I doesn't affect my body fat percentages from going down, but when I have low body fat my body doesn't respond to the pill (ie. regularity).

Response to various birth control pills (diff estrogen / progesterone doses) is a very individual thing. What she should do is work with her doc to find the one that works the best for her. Try one pill, watch for cramping, break thru bleeding (i.e. bleeding mid cycle) huge emotional swings, etc. If it doesn't work, try another one w/ a diff dose of hormones until finding one that works.

I've used "Trilevelin" for about 8 years now with no problem. Ortho Tricyclene is a popular one because they actually advertise that one. Mine was initially selected by my doc - its a very low dose estrogen / progesterone pill - i've had good luck with it. I dont' recall ever noticing any particular increase in weight or anything. I was able to drop down to 8-9% bf naturally (no diuretics, as, etc) for my first comp while on it. My period stopped when I got below 11% bf, but it picked back up again a month after the competition when my bf went back up.

She should work with her doc to get the right dosage. But if it isn't working or is causing some discomfort, she should not hesitate to tell her doc and try a diff one. It may take a few months to get the right one. If she is experiencing serious weight problems, moodiness or discomfort, she should not hesitate to go back to the doc. If he won't work w/ her on it, get a new doc. And in some cases, she may need to look at something besides the pill - e.g. the b/c shot or something.

I have used triphsail 21 retained alot of water, used ortho tricyclen really bad mood swings, went off the pill for 3 years and just started back on diane 35 this is one of the newest out it was designed for women whi have acne, I have not held water or had any mood swings, it has also improved my complexion.

ive used orth tri-cyclen too, not bad, my doc just gave me a new starter kit of Alesse....im going to give it a try come my next period.

Don't blame her one bit - thats why I stopped it 6 years ago - but the Dr. has just put me on Microgynon which is a 2nd Generation pill And for the first time ever on the pill - no weight gain, hormonal emotional outbursts or bad skin. Its a very low dose pill and the only side effects that I experienced where feeling slightly hormonal for the first week while my body settled into it.

The only part of my body that has grown is my boobs - so I'm happy with this little gem of a pill!

I justed wanted to post a reply with my experience with ortho tryclen (spelling?), I was on that for a couple of years and found I was an emotional distaster! :bawling: When I talked to my doctor she prescribed Alese which is a milder birth control, and it has worked awesome, and seemed to reduce retention of fat (which a lot of birth controls promote) as well as bloating = :D

But the other thing I have learned with the birth control is that different pills work different for different girls, my girlfriends all use something different for different reasons (i.e. acne, etc.), and as you have read, alot of girls use ortho, which works fine for them.

RE:

I currently use Triphasil, Ive been on them for three months and they seem great. A friend introduced them to me and she wont use anything else. also a good thing to know, according to her she has intercourse without condoms so she recons that triphasil pills are excellent for birth control.

I havent suffered any side affects from them and to my knowlege neither has she, but keep researching maybe youll here more about them or find something better :)
