whey shake & ketosis

under

New member
Will a whey shake with oil flax etc keep you in ketosis or not, what is the best thing to add to the shake if not...

You mean will it let you stay in ketosis? It depends...

Too much protein and not enough fat will prevent ketosis. Ketogenic diets are not as simple as eliminating carbs. They require you to eat A LOT of fat (at least 70% to 80% of total calories seems to work for most). If you're eating too much protein the body will initiate gluconeogensis (i.e., the production of glucose from proteins).

So the answer to your question depends on how much protein you're taking in.

Well I have upped protein to over 220grms per day, it worked a small amount, but not great. So today and the rest of this week I am taking in fats, ie flax and 3,6,9 oil, but should I reduce the protien & to what amount I would like to keep the muscle i have obviously and again can I take in whey, or whey with oil.

That's pretty low bodyfat already...you wish to lose more?

At 185 I would run a CKD like this:

Day Cals/day FAT(g) PRO(g) CARBS(g)
1 2109 199 79 Less Than 20 Grams
2 1998 166 125 Less Than 20 Grams
3 1887 136 165 Less Than 20 Grams
4 2220 173 166 Less Than 20 Grams
5 1998 155 150 Less Than 20 Grams
6 1887 136 165 Less Than 20 Grams

(Carb Up) Day 7 2886 32 144 505

Figures are based on Mr.X's CKD manual....some people disagree with the values but nobody ever agrees on anything. Common criticism is that protein is too low to maintain muscle mass - but I believe this to be the best approach until one is used to the diet (and more aware of how much protein they can consume and still maintain ketosis). Tweak as necessary.

A whey shake can keep one out of ketosis. I only recommend using it post workout. Whey is absorbed very fast and if one is not in ketosis will be converted to glucose delaying your descent into ketosis.

Is it just whey protein or is there another protein that you can take?
