Whey Protein

New member
Do you guys use whey protein?
Do you guys think it helps speed recovery time and bulk up?
What brand of whey protein do you use?
What supplements do you think actually work?

This should be in the diet or supplement forums.

I use whey protein.
Its good for post-workout and for when you need to SUPPLEMENT protein into your diet.
I use PROLAB.
I only use whey. Used creatine, didnt like the bloat.

Your new, but try to keep these type of questions on the diet and supplement. I'm not saying it because I'm tryin to be a dick, but for your own sake, you'll get better and more responses there.

I use a small brand name manufactured here in the UK: AVIFORM.

It's totally natural whey (isolate OR MF concentate) it mixes clear and has no additive such as flavourings. Tastes a bit cheesy compared to the other whey proteins, but when you get used to it it tastes great and does not fill or bloat you. It costs $220 for 20kg which is 44 lbs so its fugging cheap too.

i don't eat enough meats so protein shakes always come in handy. Bodybuilders like myself always need the extra protein to grow.

And I notice they offer free samples, which is very cool.

Well, the quick digestion is a bit exaggerated in the presence of other food. The protein by itself or with some dextrose will be absorbed very quickly, but if you do what I do, you can certainly make extended use of the whey. Mix 2 parts whey in a blender with 2 parts oats and milk. You'll wind up with 750 or so calories in a tasty shake that contains a good deal of nutrients, especially fiber. Fiber slows digestion of all foods. Fats have been shown to do this to less of an effect, if any at all, popular to contrary belief. At least, this is what studies on gastric emptying have done. Ask Lyle McDonald about more.

What's your basis for this statement?

I am curious as well.

In a perfect world, 100% of my protein would come from whole food. Protein shakes do not cause the same increase in metabolic rate that whole food protein does.

That's complete bullshit. Macronutrients are macronutrients. Your body doesn't know the difference. Besides, the protein in whey is derived from whole food anyway. It's the same as dehydrating your steak to make beef jerky, then blending the jerky. It becomes like sawdust. Still the same stuff, though.

But hey, if you wanna believe that, go ahead. I really don't feel like arguing about this, 'cause this type've crap has been discussed ad nauseum. I just know I have no problem gaining or losing weight using shakes as my staples. 'course, there's a psychological benefit to stuff you can chew for a lot of people, but that's beyond the scope of this.

That was quite an emotional response. Let me go dig up some literature comparing metabolic response of liquid calories vs. wholefood calories, okay?

Besides, whole food keeps me fuller anyway, and I have bigtime appetite control issues.

Dig up all the literature you want - the differece, if any, is going to be nominal in terms of any supposed metabolic responses. Anecdotal evidence is of the greatest importance, even though science holds its ground. I've found no change in my ability to gain or lose weight through implementing liquid meals more than solid.

As I said, though, there are other benefits. You need it for appetite control, and that's fine. If it works for you, I'm all for it. I just don't care to get into a debate, 'cause neither of us is going to back down, and what works for us just works, regardless of the processed in the body that may or may not be occurring, and results are what matter - right?

Anyways, didn't mean for the above post to sound offensively emotional. If it came off that way, I apologize. I just don't like diet debates anymore, 'cause they loop over themselves after awhile.

The main difference between protein shake and real food is obvious.
The protein shake is only protein ( if it's 100% ofcourse )
Real Food has extra, nutrients/minerals.

kustom, when I talk protein shakes, I don't mean just whey. Whey alone isn't ideal for a meal, 'cause there's nothing to slow the digestion of it. It you read one of my above posts, I suggest mixing 2 parts whey, milk, and oatmeal for a rich, thick shake that is filled with nutrients. The difference, then, isn't so obvious.

You have the most biologically available protein available that's simple to ingest.

All the brands of whey are essentially the same. There's isolate and concentrate, but the difference between the two is small. Concentrate is the best way to go. Optimum Nutrition 100%, in terms of both taste and cost, is the best I've yet to find. www.netrition.com is when I get mine.
