where do I start?

I'm new to this forum. I'm hoping to get some advice on where to begin to establish a fitness routine. I'm 27, 5'6, weigh 140 lbs, size 6. I'm OK with my overall body proportions I just need to tone up. My experience with exercise has been sporadic. I have done kickboxing, step aerobics, you name it, but I would get bored and quit after a while. Just a few days ago (after not working out for awhile),I ran 2 miles with a coworker during lunch break, and as a result two days later I'm walking like a robot, every muscle in excrutiating pain. I don't know how to pace myself, or how to know when I'm overdoing it. It's hard for me to find the motivation to work out, especially the negetive reinforcement I get from it :work out= pain; Especially that I never sick with a routine long enough to see results. Is there any good books I can read to get me going in the right direction? Where do I begin? Any advice from all of you who were in a similar situation would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I haven't run into anyone yet that "tones up" on the boards, but I can say they will help get you to where you want to be.
1) Identify your exact goals and 2) find someone with similiar interests and experience to share. I can assure you that the ladies and gentlemen of elite fitness are very helpful.

Hi:

No, the ladies on this board don't tone up. The majority of us lift weight likes animals. Like someone else said. Define what you want, then they can help you. First place to start is probably diet.
