When you're at work, how much "work" do you do?

Taps said:
Ok, I'm at work for about 5 hrs/day. I do maybe 20 mins of actual labour during that time...and that's on a good day. Seriously, I do close to NOTHING day in and day out.

Fortunetly, I've reciently discovered that we have access from the terminals here, so I can at least screw around on the 'net. :)

Oh, I work(haha!) for a bank and make around $16/hr.

What about you guys?

i work for a bank as well are you a teller??

I work for a florist b/c he is a friend of the family, and I need money.

Sometimes I work my ass off. Others I get paid to watch tv and play cards. However lately my boss has become tyrant like, and has a bad god complex. I'm putting my two weeks in tomorrow, and will do contract work until I leave for bootcamp.

Hopefully soon my brother's work will want the security cameras fixed. They called the company who installed them, and surprisingly enough they don't know how to fix it. He is going to take on the job, and sub-contract me to do the work. I plan on charging a nice sum of cash, plus expenses and lunch when I'm working. This company is the sort that will dick my brother out of vacation time, bonuses, and raises but will splurge for anything like cameras, computers, etc regardless of how overpriced it is so they'll pay my fees. I'm going to love this job.

Anyone who has done this type of work before, how much should I charge an hour not taking expenses into account?

True - that is still some of your time that would not be spent if not for your job. It's only fair if they are paying you "by the hour," anyway! =)

You do charge them for the trip TO work as well, right?

-Warik

Yeah I charge them an hour. it takes 30 minutes round trip. The other 30 minutes is for them paying me because im the most dependable person there.

I take at least 1000 calls a day at work as I run a switchoard for 12 locations. I get chewed out about every other minute....but it doesn't bother me. I'm so perky it's sick and wrong. Anyhow, it's totally brainless at this point since I've been there for so long. I also do a whole assortment of accounting.

I'm the first person in 5+ years that's been willing to stick with this job for more than a few months-- so everyone pretty much kisses my ass and doesn't care what I do. Mostly I put piles of paper all over my desk and post or e-mail all day. I'm always typing a lot though.....everyone thinks I'm very very busy.

If this were my "career" it would be incredibly depressing but it's just a job. It pays my bills and will pay for half of school once I get around to finishing up my final year of college.

Im proud to say I work hard, an if theres no more work to be done, I go ask the boss for more. There are several reasons. First I absolutelh hate being bored and since the work is interesting, I like to do it. Second I take pride in my ability to work hard, at every single job ive held ever since I was 16, i have always been told im one of the hardest workers theyve ever had. Third I hate it with a big passion when I'm trying to do buy something or get some service done and people are slacking and make me wait, so, even though im not in a customer service position, there are people who depend on me and I dont want to make them wait.

Well I dont get paid a whole lot, but I really like my job :)

Haha, nooooo way. Tellers have to work thier asses off....and they don't even get payed all that much (I think around $10/hr).

My official title is Customer Associate, which is odd since I rarely deal with bank customers at all. Mostly I just sit around and answer financial questions (mutual funds, investments, etc).

Raina, I'm totally where you are right now. My job is just a job, it's not a career. It pays for school, so hopefully in a year or two I can finally graduate. :)

Zirakzigil, I actually do work hard when I have to. :D It's just that quite often there's nothing for me to do. I don't have a boss or manager around (who has the authority to tell me what to do anyway) so I'm pretty much responsable for my own workload. I think it's really cool that you take pride in your work. I wish I did.

Golfer18, that's a sweet deal you have going. In a month or so, I'll have enough clout to be able to pull the same shit. lol

Oh, and Warik has proven once again, that he's the smartest man on Elite.

i do okay, but i work for a consulting company and am ALWAYS busy.

gone are the "Genuis Child Who Knows Zilch" days which saw my elite post count grow exponentially. Now they actually expect me to code and shit:happyscra
