When To Do Deadlifts??

New member
So it seems me and another lifter are in a bit of a disagreement over when in a workout to perform heavy deadlifts. What do you guys think? Should deadlifts be performed first or 2nd, or near the end? I've always assumed they should be done near the end of the workout.

I would love any opinions and or fact based articles. Thanks guys.

I always do my heavy compound movements first. Squats, Deadlifts, Flat bench press, etc. These movements take the most out of you so it's best (in my opinion) to do them when you have the most energy.

If you're doing Squats and Deads in the same workout then Squat first.
I greatly prefer to split them into seperate workouts.

My pull day goes in this order:

1) Squats
2) Deadlifts
3) Barbell Rows
4) Chin-Ups

I always prefer to get the heaviest compound lifts out of the way first.

are u able to dead effectively after squats? i'm just a beginner, so i'm not sure, but i feel if i have a workout in between the squats and the dead, its more effective. cuz the legs have time to rest..

I haven't had any problems. I just don't want to wear my back out with the rows and chins before hitting the deads. I want maximum power for those.

Depends on where you are with your training. Right now, I do them last. If I did them first, I'd have nothing left for the rest of my workout.

I don't do them on the same day as I squat though.

I do chest, shoulders, triceps, back width, back thickness.

My other workout is biceps, forearms, calves, hams, quads.

I workout on a m-w-f schedule, hitting each bodypart twice in 8 days.

I guess I am the only one who keeps a barbell loaded behind the sofa just in case I get the urge? Really, there is no "bad" time to lift. If you are feeling extra strong and it is not dead day why should you not try for a personal record. Likewise, when it is dead day and your warmups suck and you feel out of the grove, why risk injury?
