what would you guard against? would you plan it out to the exact moment of the hit? would you plan a defense prior to the crime? what small details would yiou take care of as to not get popped?

Opportunity and motive. That's what Columbo always looked for and he always caught them fewls.

So get an alibi and plan the murder a long time in advance so you can appear to have no motivation whatsoever.

Witnesses and evidence. No witnesses means a lot. All evidence after that is circumstantial. Not nearly as strong. The biggest evidence is of course a body. If they don't have a body they don't have shit. Got that from The Sopranos I think.

Oh yeah, if you bury the body in the desert, don't forget to dig the hole first. Otherwise, someone else could come along while you are digging it and then you have to dig another hole, before you know it you could be out there all night. Got that from Casino.
