However, I consider EF a little playground where I can actually post what I think without real world repercussions. lol...that's pretty pathetic. i guess what you're saying works in reverse...since plenty of people would just keep their mouth shut about something in RL and go ahead and PM you when you "offend' them. it's funny how people get riled up over shit, especially on the internet.

i'm more or less as blunt as i am here in RL, although in real life i think you have to use a little more tact... i.e. know when to avoid certain conversations in certain situations. anyone who has to hide behind a computer is a chickenshit IMO

Go figure...I'm always happier to have good conversations with people who believe vastly different things from me that DON'T involve that kind of vitrol. Good discourse between oposing minds doesn't require that we offend each other. In fact, I find that when people are proud of themselves for being offensive, they've completely self defeated any sort of point they might have wanted to make.

This is one reason I enjoy talking to agnostics about religion far more than most athiests I've encountered. The agnostics I've met talked with me, the athiests I've met talked at me. Huge difference, and I'm pretty sure that's not the sort of thing Patton was thinking about when he said that.

That being said, I don't know what led to you being called an asshole and maybe this person jsut had a stick up their butt. Hard core christians are often guilty of the same kind of "talking at" as the athiests I've mentioned. But I'd never be "proud" per se, of being offensive. It really accomplishes nothing.

I've never known a discussion on an internet chat board changing someones views on anything they consider important.Some people find the mere questioning of the veracity of their beliefs offensive.

Views don't have to be changed for it to have been a constructive discussion. Going at it from that viewpoint is exactly where people get into trouble.

And yeah, some do, which is why I added that last part about someone ahving a stick up their butt. But I still don't think offending someone is an accomplishment when it comes to debate. In the cases where people are offended just because you questioned them...well they are what they are. And they'll still be what they are tomorrow, after they've called you an asshole.
