...this company made an initial offer....the base and performance based criteria which would net and extra 25% payable every 4 weeks.

So....in addition an offer was made to cover relocation, temp housing, 35 bucks a day for meals and 37.5 cents per mile ALL for 60 days.

That package wont work for me as I want to start work and already be settled in.

I totaled their compensations above and it comes to about 8500 dollars.

My offer:

base salary and bonus that would put me in the upper 25th percentile based on job and location

6000 signing bonus, waiving all other comensations for moving, etc...to be paid back to them if I leave of my own accord after one year.

Sound fair to yall?

Sounds fair (your offer). Their gas compensation is a joke. I was receiving 0.42 cents/km, and gas is cheaper here. What is the length of the contract ?

the only contract would be for me to pay back the dough if I leave - the one year was my idea as they would lose most of their compensations(their offer) if I left b4 a year was up as they had no length stipulation

most companies just give you a FLAT moving renumeration amount. It's up to you if you wish to actually use it for moving, or buy a nice boat.

That way you dn't have to make a weekly ritual of handing over receipts, arguing over mileage, asking for extensions, etc.

Actually most employees for tax purposes, list sign-on bonuses as "moving expenses". Moving expenses *are* tax-deductible.

The key question would be -- are you negotiating for your "expenses" or are you negotiating for your sign-on bonus. Big difference.

Word of advice: Get your negotiations done and over with quick. Companies don't like to spend days and weeks haggling over this stuff. Eventually it gets to the point where they may start "looking elsewhere". You don't want to put yourself in that position. Keep reminding them this "bonus" is a one-shot deal. If you plan on being there for awhile, you won't get another chance for this type of negotiation to seek the benefits of "signing-on".

There would be expenses on my end.....so the money would cover moving expenses as well as fist/last month rent/ some furntiture etc.

My thoughts were they would save 2500 and have a signed waiver that it would be paid back to them if I left.....lets them hedge their bet and helps my particular situation
