When is a speaker too damned big?

I had about 1400 watts blowng through some dual 18's today.

Tripped the circuit breaker on a pro DJ multi outlet.

Seemed quiet enough until I stepped a 100 yards away. Seemed louder then.

i've installed 10's that bang tighter and harder than a 15 year old asian prostitute

Huge sound takes huge speakers. Especially if you like the bass.

10's just sound tighter and meaner to me than 12's and larger.

Limit the input frequency with steep crossovers, give the amp constant and steady juice via a cap and separate battery, reinforce the box with resin and stuffing...you can squeeze some seriously siiiiick bass from a 10.

18's are only for competitions, utter junk noise.

wait, you're taking about home and stage systems? lol.

I'm talking about car audio maing

I have 5 Paradigms in my living room that beg to differ with you.

Clean power (amp) with efficient quality speakers will produce loudness. (Before considering room placement, wiring, knowledge.)

I have a set of the first ones for rear fill and a set of the second (to the left) for front fill. I woulnt consider them "huge"

maybe when he is like Al Roker...oh, wrong kind of speaker...nevermind

What does that mean ? and what are dual 18's ?

No such thing as to big speakers. 1400 watts ? my cd walkman is louder than that hehe just kidding. 1400 watts is pretty good if it's for a home system, my 320 watt stereo can be heard from the end of my street. Last event i went to was 150,000 watts and that wasn't loud enough 4 me, i have never heard music that i thought was 2 loud :)

my guess is with that much airflow being moved the sound needs to resonate more and the distance did it. granted bass is supposed to be non directional, but it still needs to resonate. higher frequencies are more shrill up close, and lessen with distance. bass is no different. its punchier up close and deepens as you distance yourself.

i think the hardest i've been hit with bass was with 10's and 12's. i thought i was going to have a heart attack.

Well we have car audio guys and home stereo guys.

I was talking about an outdoor mini concert. Maybe 500 people.

This is a 2000 watt amp, I have another one that is 1800 I think. Takes a lot to make a real difference when you get up that high.

Mine are too big and FOR SALE....5foot tall MTX's two 15's two mids and a horn..Rated 650watts continues think there rated to 850 max..Way to much bump for me..Rare find maybe ebay them lol... What good a speaker if you cant turn it past 50 watts with out someone calling the cops? Always wondered what the full 650watts would be like.

Hardly. You won't find Peavey equipment at a big show. Most big systems use woofers made by JBL, EV, Aura, McCauley, RCF, or B&C.

That is supposed to take 15 amps....which is about 1800 watts. I think I did have it cranked all the way as a matter of fact.

So.......my amp is bigger than your amp!

hah!

At the club we have two 5000 watt amps to drive eight 18" woofers, in a 300-capacity room.

1) Fuck you for spoiling my moment

2) Do you use these watts?

3) How do you prevent deafness?

4) Are you in the boonies? My neighbor (in the city) complained when I cranked one speaker for a few seconds to make sure everything worked.

Neighbors = the suck More concerned about what I do than with the fact they have not gone out in 16 years.

One 12 sounds tighter and deeper than two 12's. Two just makes everything louder and more obnoxious than it's single counterpart.

Could be a hardware problem.

Unless you just prefer mono over stereo.

Thanks...I sat glued for 40 minutes awaiting a response fron the dB boss.

I just bought 4 pretty cheap 12" 'DJ' speakers for providing sound in satellite rooms. Tough thing to be prepared for almost any scenario without going in the hole for 10 years.

Don't like used speakers. They can be ruined so quickly.

Oh, like the big night clubs use ?

Those brands listed are what you are most likely to find inside the boxes on a major arena tour.

 I had two 12" Rockford subs w/500w two channel amp before and they didn't sound as good for bass as when I downgraded to 125w single channel with one 12" sub. I've heard others say the only advantage of two subs is loudness, at the sacrifice of sound depth/tightness.

Yeah you cant fuck with pro audio gear - there's only so much that a 12V car battery can really make happen.
