When doing shrugs....

I slightly roll my shoulders. I use to just do the up & down motion, but it works the traps a lot better when I roll the shoulders. As long as I keep my back straight, I can stay away from any kind of injury.

never roll shoulders, never....the best way to do it i pretend like you are trying to put your delts in your ear and hold it till you cant anymore then repeat, i can say that my shoulders/traps are impressive but my arms need some work

You can roll them "slightly". and by slightly I mean just barely. You must experiment to get this just right. If you roll to much you will injure yourself. Keeping the back straight is also crutial.

Also, I've noticed if I keep the traps flexed the WHOLE time I am shrugging I get a much better burn.

do dumbell shrugs first 3 sets no less than 8 reps, then go to the squat rack and load up the bar with the max you can shrug and do those behind you back 3 sets no less than 8 reps each, then go to the shrug machine and do those till it fells like you just cant do em anymore...next day you will be a sore ass mofo, i do traps and shoulders on the same day but when i was really trying to get traps i did em on back and shoulder day

you have to remember that alot of ppl here on the baord are not only new to AAS but also lifting in general if they read to roll shoulders they will do it...next thing you know we will have a few members here upset cuz they fucked up their shoulders and cant train

Good point.

I use dumbells and slightly bend over and try to touch my traps together in the back.....kinda hard to explain but if you can get a hold of blood and guts it's just like Dorian does 'em.....

These are great! Start out with a light weight untill you figure out how to do it though. It's a little awkward at first but, it hits them very nicely. I do this & heavy barbell shrugs, concentrating on the downward pull at the bottom of the shrug. I see a lot of people just moving their arms up & down, their traps never move when they shrug. Form & ego are often the problem.

Traps were VERY weak bodypart for me. For years I couldn't get them to grow. I have tried a couple new methods and have put more size on in the last 6 mos. than I have in 15 years. I used to do shrugs and upright rows all the time. What I found was my traps respond better when I am pulling from about a 45 degree angle, rather than straight up and down. I upright rows and shrugs from low cable machine and pull/shrug from about a 45 degree angle, then follow up with dumbbell shrugs. Don't need as much weight either. It worked for me.

My traps are my favorite and definately stand out. I always alternate, 3 weeks straight bar shrugs, 3 weeks dumbell. I do shrugs on monday along with my back, and then again on thursday along with shoulders. The day I lift traps with shoulders I also throw in 2-3 sets of upright rows, alternate these between dumbells and straight bar.
