When does the body begin using stored fat as energy?

I always assumed that the body uses glycogen first, then when this source is tapped, it uses stored fat. Today, a guy I work with (ex- competition BB) told me that when glycogen stores are full, the body likes to keep them that way so it will use stored fat as a source of energy before it uses glycogen.

In what state are we talking?

Body uses fat as fuel at rest.

It really is going to depend on what your doing.

If you have glycogen in your muscles and are weight training then obviously the body is going to burn that before fat.

Scientifically speaking if you weight train you'll be using glycogen since heavy lifting use glycolytic fast twitch fibers. You start using fat when you recruit slow twitch oxidative fibers (cardio), or moderate intensity lifting.

Right,

It depends on intensity and oxygen consumption (aerobic/anaerobic work)

One would have to have a serious binge in order to store a 1lb of fat from just ONE day...esp. if you go immidiately back to you low cal the following week...........I don't care if you eat while you sleep for 23 hours on one day..........your body would be re-fueling from the low cals throughout the week..........

not necissarily. if someones glycogen levels are full. and they eat a half gallon of bryers icecream they could easily put on one pound of fat in a day. because its over 3000 cals in the icecream
