say if you doing some severe calorie restriction when your dieting. how low does your metabolizm go. i heard some people say it wont go below 75% of its normal capacity. does you metabolizm just level off around there??????

another thing lets say someone has a 1500 calorie restriction per day and another guy has a 1000 calorie restriction per day. does your metabolizm drop at the same rate lets say 3 percent per day or what??????

Interesting question. I think it would completely depend on the individual. It can go as low as starvation mode, where your body will start using stored aminos and hoarding any food eaten as fat. I know a guy who eats like 500 calories a day, and it happend to him. He went from a fairly built 155 to a chubby 135. But he's got an eating disorder.

I do not have any hard numbers but I would guess it will go as low as it possibly can to keep you alive. However, the main problem with the super-low calorie diet isnt so much a lowered metabolism as it is the muscle loss (which can in and of itself reduce metabolic rate) which accompanies such calorie restrictions.

damn where the hell did i see somwhere on here it said your metabolizm wont drop below 75 percent. i wish i new the rate of decrease in metabolism also. because i was thinking about doing a very low cal diet to get super ripped then when i come off im gonna slowly bump up carbs and fats each day for a couple weeks to slowly work its way up to 100 percent.

i was just gonna do a diet like i did in the past very low fat very low carbs and one gram per pound of lean body mass in protien. carbs and fat i would try to keep below 30. ive done this before and got super ripped. but i started eating normal again too quickly and gained it back

I was thinking of trying a diet similar to that. I've used it before, last time I did I calculated it out and I was at like 750 cals some days, all protein. I'd try it again, it wasn't hard, but maybe that's because I was broke and had no food.

Kid, when your broke, that translates to either 4 for $1 generic brand macaroni and cheese or those 10 for $1 ramen noodle brick soups.

Like I said I dont know for sure but it would seem that our body would be too smart for that and would be able to keep slowing down in an attempt to keep you alive as long as possible with insufficient calories.

Haha, yeah, I know, but I was being real anal about what I ate, and I was working 2 jobs while going to classes, so I never had alot of time to be hungry. I noticed how low my cals were and started eating alotta peanutbutter whenever I ate. That helped my hunger, and I lost alot more weight.

REE per unit LBM probably does not drop to less than 75%.

The problem is that, as others have pointed out, you start losing LBM, which will lower REE, the hormonal environment in your body shifts toward using protein instead of fat for fuel, and your activity level decreases due to a decrease in SNS activity.

So, you can still reach a point where the amount of fat that is burned is basically zero, despite a very low caloric intake.

It is all about leptin.
