What's so great about Xbox Live?

I always hear people refer to it like it's crack for media junkies but I've never used it myself. I've seen friends use it but only for a few minutes.
What is it that makes it so reveled?
I've read numerous complaints about lag in games, probably because MS doesn't use dedicated servers. I've also read about how you can only rent movies (not download) on it for practically the same price as Blockbuster dvds, and that the wait time for these streaming movies to load is often as long as it would take you to drive to your local video store, rent the movie, and come back and put it in your player. The service costs $50/yr on top of what your ISP charges you per month for the internet, where you can get anything you want, period. Not to mention you're doing this all through an electronic box that has an unprecedented 33%+ hardware failure rate (although apparently that's been fixed).

I guess what I'm bitching about is that I want to know what makes all its endless praise so justified.

btw I like Microsoft but simply don't think anything can be as good as I keep hearing Xbox Live as being.

its a quick and easy way to play with thousands of other people.

its not perfect, no, but I can download new games, or new content for existing games, I can instantly join a multiplayer session for games, etc.

Sure you have all of this on your computer, but a gaming computer system will run you what, $2000 for something half decent, but a console costs your $500 tops.

its the best thats out there nintendo online is only availible on a few games and even then its laggy sony online is ok but has a lack of exclusive titles and the lot smaller comunity compared to xbox live

I built a PC for $800 that can run the Crysis demo at 30-35 fps.

I can understand the whole huge online gaming community thing but I guess online gaming isn't solid enough imo. I don't want to be immersed in an intense battle, building my stats and having the game of my life and then be disconnected because of lag or server error, which is non existent in single player gaming, or true "in-house" multiplayer gaming.

it makes a game much more unique everytime and fun to talk and interact with other people. Some people can be so hillarious. There is one black hip hop guy i always play with who is just a freakin' riot. "God daaammn motherfuckah, what you shot me foh!!"

Plus it keeps you int he living room - and if you have relationships, it's much more ideal than sitting in a bedroom in front of a monitor.

Like others have said, being able to talk to people from all over the world who have the same 'hobby' is pretty cool. Last week I was playing GRAW2 with a guy from Italy. I relax more while playing if I have someone to talk to.

Also, some games improve during online play.

It sounds cool. It also sounds like it'd be pretty time consuming if you wanted to make it worthwhile. Almost like a lifestyle. Like I said earlier also, I could see myself getting into it more when stability for online gaming isn't an issue.

Anybody that spends enough time on a video game console to desire the XBOX live feature needs to get a life.

I have an X Box 360, but I probably play it 3 hours a month at most. My freetime i spent pumping iron, not pumping Nazi's full of lead.

It's only worth if

A) your life revolves around video games

and

B) you play alone

I love video games, I really do. But the fun is playing with your boys. I just can't get into these online wars where your playing dudes that play the game for a living.

I played Call of Duty 4 on it this past weekend. It's was pretty cool, but the house I was in was so fuckin loud that I couldn't hear wtf was going on. Gotta get that game though.

A very good PC with top quality video card will cost you around $1500. And you can change/tweak parts do many other things too unlike a xBox.

I have friends hookeed on that game but don't have it myself yet

It's great if you like to hear teenage kids cussing, singing and generally being badasses online.

I couldn't stand listening to all the little punks, got rid of it and modded my XBOX.

I remember turning down a date with this hot chick 2 years ago..

cuz I was just enthralled with playing Star Wars BattleFront II on the xbox.

Goddammit they just came out with new maps, and I was now a f'n master as the republic with my trusty blaster and grenades. Fuck no i ain't leaving woman!

I remember playing counterstrike on xbox for 30 hours STRAIGHT. I think me and TC2 duked it out once.

"Bomb has been planted..."
