What's a good point & shoot camera?

Post up hos,

I want something small, has good sensor size, resolution, panoramic option, wide angle options. So when I go out, I can just stick it in my pocket.

I can't carry my big fat dSLR and packpack everywhere I go. Just not feasible. So I need something more portable I can just take everywhere I go.

I post up advice all day, so return the favor you hookers!

Iron Man this thursday btw. Phuck yeah!

I got a brother in law who's into that stuff, hang on and I'll go pick his brain.

Canon PowerShot A410 -- won't do a panorama in-camera, but it has an option to help you stitch one together in the computer. Truly pocket sized, like a big candy bar. Uses AA rechargeables, good battery life. A little slow, not an "action" camera. You can play photographer, as it has lots of manual settings, or just leave it in automatic.

Upgraded from that to the PowerShot A630. I carry it in a medium-size belt pouch, but the front end has an "eyelid" and the screen flips so there's no exposed glass, so it could go in a big pocket. You get 8.0 megapixels and the tilt-screen viewer is nice; you can hold the thing 'way over your head or down at knee level and still see what you're doing, to compose some otherwise impossible shots. Good camera. Again, full set of manual and automatic settings. I was trying to do a sunrise once and found I had to override the auto, because it turned dim red twilight into broad daylight.

Thing about P&S, you aren't going to get RAW format and that's going to limit what you can do in post-processing. But a camera is like a gun -- when you need it, it doesn't matter how good the one you left at home is.

I have a Panasonic DMC-TZ3, 10 mp, has a 3" viewer, very handy. Also, it has a 12X optical, 4 digital lens. I take quite a few shots further than you would want to with a point and shoot, my son plays baseball, and I needed one that could reach further. It's pretty nice, in the $400, range.
I found the Best Buy site helpful, it has alot of info, you can compare cameras side by side, explains options, etc.

Yeah i'm liking the A630 or A720IS as well. lotsa good reviews on Amazon. Tho not being able to save to RAW might be annoying. As long as the camera doesn't save too much noise, which from reading, doesn't look like it does. It's widest is 35mm tho. Plus way cheaper than lx2.

New article on Slashdot a day or two ago -- seems there is an open source update for the Canon P&S cameras (including the A630) to add RAW functionality. You just unzip it to your memory card, it shows up in the menu and you can turn it on and off. Does not make any permanent changes to the camera, so it's not really "firmware" in the sense of burning a new BIOS onto a PC. It's more like a plugin.

Still haven't bought one. I want one that fits my back pocket, and also has aperture and shutter priorities. I guess I want it all, but they don't make that type of camera. Kinda like me being in love with a girl that doesn't exist. Oh well, i'll figure something out.
