It was kids like they suspect, the teenaged son told people his family was going on vacation and a bunch of them partied in the house. They knew when to clear out so they had to know the families travel plans. If it really were squatters they would have stripped everything they could sell out of the place, sprayed graffiti on the walls, set fire to the stove instead of baking cookies and taken a shit in the master bed.
