What to Do for Late Evening Post-Workout Meal?

Because of my schedule, I can't make it back from the gym until 9PM to 10PM two days a week. On those days, I manage to eat my dinner about 5:00.

Do I still need to consume a few carbs and protein late at night after those workouts? I don't want to eat a lot that late. Shakes are out because I'm laid off right now and am finding it hard enough to make my gym fees. :(

So, can someone suggest some light post-workout snacks? By light, I just mean not much to eat--I've already had my dinner.

Thanks!

if you're workin out you'll need to have more than just a light snack. Have some dextrose right after working out at least - it's very cheap.

Try this: 50g protein, 30g dextrose, 10g creatine, 100mg R-ALA....this would be ideal; if you can't afford this try:

1can tuna drained/1/4 cup of white rice

Thanks! I was in a quandary over how much to eat since I've been told it's bad to consume too much food late at night.

For now it'll be the tuna and rice. Wow. I don't think I've been eating enough after workout. :(

Again, thanks!

Some people like to say that eating late at night interrupts sleep patterns. I eat a crap load before bed and I sleep like a baby.

IMO, eating(the ratio Mr.X mentioned) before bed is crucial since we really only recover and grow in our sleep. Why go into that process with nothing to build with? The way your schedule is, you are in your post-workout window at that time as well. This just makes it twice as important that you eat well then. You'd definately be cheating yourself if you ate simply a snack or nothing at all.

Well said- that's true.

Can someone tell me exactly what dextrose does, and where I can buy it? Oh, and of course why it'd be important/useful to incorporate into my diet. Would I take it once a day or more and when?

i get dextrose at ny wine making store- very cheap- i take about 80 grams within 5 minutes of every workout. days that i don't train, i don't take it .
