What The Heck is Wrong with My PS2?

curling

New member
I have tried three new games in it from Hollywood Video. TimeSplittters 2, Pro Surfer and another time splitter 2. And everytime I put the game in it goes to the browser system config mode and then it eventually says disc read error. I thought it was my playstation but then it plays my GTA3 fine. So what do you think the deal is? Also they write in black marksolot(sp) a number on top of the disc like 540 or 139 could that prevent my ps2 from reading the disc?

Please help. Also I tried to clean it but it wouldn't read the cleaning disc either.

Try cleaning the lens and the rest of the ps2. Use and aircan to get rid of dust. The black marker shouldn't cause a problem with the cd.

Is it an older one?

For some reason I think some of the older ones had bad lasers that didn't last too long.

I was having disk read errors after my g/f accidently knocked the ps2 out of the entertainment center (tripped on the controller).. It would play regular ps games but that was it, it could no longer read the dvd games..

GTA3 is a dvd game I think, so that would cancel that option.. Try playing a dvd movie and see what happens

Sony wanted $$ to fix my ps2, so I bought a new system from walmart, swapped the guts and returned it. (walmart takes down the s/n when you buy the system and checks the s/n when you return it. The s/n is on the case and not the guts)

I dont think the mark-a-lot pens will make adifference, otherwise nobody would be able to play the games.. I am able to play blockbuster games on mine and they put a sticker across the top of the discs.

There are also options in the system config menu that will allow you to adjust the laser, I could never get that to work.

It was the second generation after the hype stage I got it just by walking in the store and picking it up. Would that be the new or the older one.

How do you clean the lens? I have heard the "data" on a disc is actually on the top is that true?

Just use a soft rag that won't scratch it. wipe it over a couple of times. Just don't touch the lens with your finger. As for the data being on the top, I'm not sure.

ok how do I do that isn't the lens in the machine? Do I need to take out the tray or what?

Sorry can't help you there.

I would suggest checking out any number of PS2 boards. I am sure they will be more help.

Your need to take the top of the system off. After that the lens should be visible.

Does it just pop off or is there screws? Sorry for the dumb questions I just don't want to "screw" it up.

You'll have to take some screws out. Nothing will mess up along as you leave the rest of the system alone. After the screws are taken out, the top should come off.

I had the same problem, where it would read certain disks and not read others. After some troubleshooting, I determined that it wouldn't read DVD's or DVD games. Called Sony, and told them I'd never tried a DVD in the system, and they cut the repair cost in half. Took 'em about 2 weeks to fix it.

The reality of it is, it was my fault for knocking the stupid thing on the floor.

I've had the exact same thing with a PSX and a Dreamcast and when the time comes I'll do it with the PS2. It's totally bs buying a game system and it start messing up within a year.

Ive swapped many a psx and 1 ps2 so far.

The psx problem was I kept messing up the soldering trying to put in a mod chip.. The ps2 was dropped and stopped working correctly..

The trick to swapping the guts w/o getting caught is with the void sticker.. when you take the black sticker off of the ps2 case, clear letters showing "VOID" appear.. Take a black permanent marker and fill in the clear letters, then slap that puppy back on when you are done.. as long as you are half-way careful nobody knows until someone else gets the ps2 back home and it doesnt work.

Walmart normally has some putz that doesnt want to be there handling returns and could give a shit.. I normally go to the women when returning stuff and havent had any problems.

When i had the same problem and approached the video rental store they told me that certain customers will leave games on for days on end without shutting off the PS2 due to the fact they don't have a memory card. This in turn damages the game (scratches) which in turn makes the game give a read error.
