I would really appreaciate some info

I have NOTHING on my PC that is of importance but I want to start putting stuff on it that is,

and I would like to protect things

I would start with a hardware firewall or software if you insist and a good anti-virus program. A network sniffer would be nice too, if you would monitor it ... although I am sure many firewalls will have this built in.

I got the whole Norton suite.. anit virus firewall blah blah.. Got an external firewall and then the Windows firewall.. Keep everyhting up to date... Other than that.. some small adjustments can make it safer but I think that if a REAL hacker wants to get in they willb e able to

The only truly secure computer is one locked in a room with no network access and no mouse or keyboard.
Just about all security measures boil down to security by obscurity, meaning people can't hack what they can't see.
Assuming you plan to some version of Windows the best you're going to get (on an end user budget) is:
- a decent firewall (Cisco PIX 501/SMC Barricade)
- antivirus software
- trojan removal program
- Windows 2K/XP with NTFS perms and apply one of the security templates.
- create a non-admin user account with a good password and use that for your daily usage. Virii tend to run wild on Windows because people use the computer using the Administrator acct which has the power to do anything, that means the virus you let execute can do anything.
If you're that serious about you should at least look into some user friendly version of Linux like Red Hat, Mandrake or Suse. I personally use FreeBSD and I don't give security a moment's thought most days. I have my own OpenBSD firewall w/Intrusion Detection , spam protection & antivirus.
95% of hackers out there are the kiddie script variety. They're easily stopped with most any up to date firewall & AV. The next 4% are the ones you worry about. Make yourself a difficult enough target that they'll just move on to someone else. The last 1% are going to get in no matter what you do; you just have to hope they have bigger fish to fry than you.

Norton Internet Security is probably all around the most effective and simplest software firewall/antivirus package available.

Dial Tone pretty much summed up the basics for windows xp.

kazaa would be your first location to "shop" ...

PS use kazaalite - current install program is klitekpp243e.exe
- kazaa without all the spyware and adware

Scorpion and Dialtone covered everything I was going to say. I would also suggest Norton Internet Security as it is a good firewall and antivirus built into one program. If possible add a router into the mix, usually routers and/or data switches have some built in protection which you can tweak a bit if you know what you are doing.

Most "crackers" will look for unprotected systems with a scanner. They will scan a block of IP's and find ones who are vulnerable to attack later. Most firewalls will protect you from those intrusive scans for vulnerabilities. Norton is excellent but not impenetrable...again as Dial Tone stated, usually kiddi3s try to find easy marks. Advanced "blackhats" are looking for more substantial marks than your home pc in most cases.
