What percentage of your salary should you spend or housing, car note, ...

I was afraid of that.

That's what I was asking indirectly. I've been looking at subcompacts, but keep catching myself saying, "I can afford more than that". But rationally I don't drive enought (<5k miles/year) to dump a shitload of $$$ on a vehicle that's just gonna sit outside and depreciate.

Somewhere there's a personal budget outline that gives percentages of your take home pay that you shouldn't exceed.

I think in general you divide your monthly take home pay by two. Half of your pay goes to necessities, e.g. housing, car notes, food, insurance, etc ...

The other half is discretionary.

well if you get approved for a mortgage they will tell you those numbers

but for me i do the numbers myself

Buy used, and don't lease. If you're set on getting a new car, you can find relatively new that have only been driven a few thousand miles. You always want someone else to take the first hit - that's the biggest one.
