What makes people evil?

Some say that it is caused by our envirement, while others say it is something abnormal within each of us. That some just have no abillity to control.

I tend to believe that it is a combination of the two.

I think we all have the abillity to do evil, but most can control these feelings. However in the wrong envirement the feelings can be intensified, and the line between good and evil gets blurred.


I ask because you see so many "good kids" from "good families" do the most dispicable acts to others. I just don't understand how someone can basically have no conscience.

Also regarding genetics - if a child (male) has a sex chromosome abnorality that produces a extra Y chromosome (XYY) they are much more likely to become criminals - but as kind of natures justice they dont turn out very smart (mildly retarded) so they get caught with ease. There are a couple studies of moderate-high percentages in jails with this condition.

Having said that, then how come two people raised in the same house can be so completely different? One becomes a lawyer and the other becomes a murderer. They both went to top schools, graduated with honors, and had thriving careers in their chosen fields.

95% of evil has to do with social upbringing if you ask me. what is evil by one set of cultural standards isn't evil by another(s). Hitler wasn't evil by his culture's standards (i know i open myself up to be attacked for that but it is basically true), neither were the KKK (in fact the KKK & nazi's were conservative parties. in order to qualify as a 'conservative' you have to believe heavily in family values & morality. You can take the Biblical story of The Good Samaritan and Change the person to an Al-Queida Afghani and retitle it The Good Afghan and Jesus would tell the story exactley the same.
