When I was little... my mom baked our own bread. I hated it. It was never as soft or good as store bought. She would put it in old coffe cans to bake so the loaf would be a circle. The crusts were super hard the the center really soft.. but I hated the flavor. it seemed dry.
Now with some of the newer bread makers (my mom always did hers from scratch) you can make bread really easily and it tastes very good. Its not the best for sandwiches though, but most people are completely content eating fresh baked bread plain. You can make it flavored sometimes if you want.
I don't think I'll ever see myself buying a bread maker.... I try to steer clear of carbs.
