What kind of Dog do you have?

I'm familiar with wolf-dogs, both from very, very close friends who own them and other people in the exotics industry.

I strongly advise you do your research ASAP. Wolf-dogs aren't like pure domestic dogs.

What kind of dog does everyone have?

Best training approach?

Anyone have a Wolfdog?

I have a German Shepherd, 14 months old.
Just removed him from his obedience school because it is treat-based, and it is ruining him. He'll do anything for a treat, and almost nothing without, the bastard :)
JK he's a good dog, but I don't approve of stuffing a dog full of treats just to get him to do tricks.

Labrador, she is a mix between a brown and black. Depending on the light you catch her in. We used some treats but lots of positive reinforcement. She is by far one of the smartest dogs I have been around. Not just saying that because she is my dog, believe me I have had some dumb ones too but she genuinely is smart. She one just knew what we were saying and has obeyed ever since. At around the 9-11 month mark. Treats are good but not in abundance and positive reinforcement.

I would recommend not placing them in one of those dog behavior classes where they take full custody of your dog for months then return it "trained". Your dog will be void of it's character. Unless it's a service dog for blind, police etc I wouldn't recommend it.

I use to have dog I found in arizona dessert he looked just like coyote..brought him back east that dog was unreal how well he could hunt...one day I had to pull him off a deer..anything you could think of raccoon, possum, groundhogs, even red ring pheasants..everyday had some thing dead in the yard...
Now I have a pittbull who's the biggest baby ever and two white boxers...the pitt is black and tan looks just like rotwhellier with huge pitt head he about 90lbs

Got a blue pit and red pit. I keep them on 6 foot chains or else they kill anything they get a hold of. Viscious dogs

Two Australian cattle dogs, one blue heeler, one red heeler. Both are so incredibly smart that training is beyond easy. It's only taken two or three attempts at teaching a command for them to get it. I've used treats here and there, but affection as a reward makes them equally happy (especially molly.....she'll do a trick and then immediately turn around for a back scratching. Kind of hilarious).

I have 2pugs, a french bulldog and a great dane, had chihuahuas, fox terriers, rotts, boxer and doberman in the past.

As MM said these are NOT common dogs, as per food, I'd recommend Taste of the Wild since they have a high protein salmon based formula that will help you because these dogs have a much higher paced metabolism than other dogs, they will have training issues unless you VERY clearly show/prove yourself as Alpha and they will fight you on it so be very patient... these dogs can not sit on a couch and mope they have to be thoroughly exercised or walked at least 1-2 times a day.
