lets see, Ive been a sophmore in college for 10 years now (havent been back since I was 22) Not certified in shit. But old job was a sys admin, and a damn fine one I might add. Now I do a little bit of everything, Novell, NT, Mainframe sys admin, but mainly desktop support. All of this self taught or ojt with one of the if not the worlds largest financial instatutions. Ive been here for 8 yrs 5 of which have been on the tech side. Its kinda backwards here, the sys admin and mainframe admin jobs here are more entry level positions and pay less than the desktop side. "Desktop support" REALLY does not describe what all we do. Any and ALL sys issues, mainframe or other, flow through us. The sys issue responsibilities were taken away from the sys admin, they now push paper and grant access, which you could train a monkey to do and set it all up on a script but then 4 people would loose their jobs. And yes, I love my job, Im very happy here, I get paid well, all male dept, fun, VERY flexable hrs, we have a gym, great benefits, 3 wks vaca, plus holidays and personal time, 2 more yrs and I get 4 wks vaca... cant complaine a damn bit.
