XP cuz I bought a new computer, not because I upgraded.

I'd be curious to know how many people actually go thru the hassle/expense of upgrading their OS.

I took XP off my laptop and put Win2k on it. I'm not a big fan of XP, but it seems like a lot of people like it.

I should also own up.

4 Win2k (three desktops, one laptop)
1 Win98
1 Win98 Light

a couple of Fujitsu pen tablets that run Win95 or Win98

running on a wired/wireless network.

XP Pro on both my boxes.

Win2K started crashing and doesn't age very well.

The XP Pro kernel seems to be much more stable than the previous OS's.

The only problem I have is in IE when I try to view the source code of a web page.

Right Click > View Source > Nothing...

Last time I check the KB for this problem couldn't find anything, although it has been a while.

oops... I forgot to add MacOS to the list.

Sorry, feel free to bash me for my inadvertent Mac bash..

That's OK, I'd equate that to a poll saying list the car you drive, and forgetting to include a go cart as one of the choices, haha!!! :lmao:

W2K professional

the only OS I cannot stand is Windows ME.
talk about a sorry setup.

Win98SE

I upgraded to this from Win95.

I won't go XP for as long as possible because I heard too many negative things about it (mostly it letting Microsoft see what you have and limiting system updates in hardware configurations).

Besides, I'm not buying new software to work with XP if I can help it.

Windows 2003 EE is out for a month now and runs my Web/File/Mail-Server. Upgrade from W2K is easy, its stable and has some nice features.
XP on the desk and notebook of course. FreeBSD and Red Hat 9 inside VM boxes just because i teach networking technologies and have to talk about *nix-OSs, not because i like them. Although FreeBSD has some nice server features W2K3 lacks like bandwith management.

You should at least get Windows 2000. You'll notice a world of improvement. I run XP on my home desktop and Win 2K on my laptop. If I had it to do over again I think I might just have put windows 2000 on the desktop PC too.

I'm about to get another pc so I'll change both mine over at that time.

Jnuts : like 2000 better than xp.....why? Just curious, I dont know the difference.lol.

I just feel there is too much crap in XP that I don't need. I'd rather do some stuff manually than have the OS manage it for me.

I've run some distros of Linux before, but it's too much of a pain in the ass for me for two reasons. One, my wife's head explodes if things aren't easy for her on the computer, and she's been using windows OSes for her whole life. Two, I do a lot of software and DB work that is Win centric, so the need to have a llnux box is low.

Well, to start, I've not had ANY problem with Win98 that would motivate me in the least to see any reason to upgrade again. I'm not sure what the Win98 bugs are, but I've not had any real problems to lose sleep over.

Second, as I'd have to replace key software, I'm waiting until basically Win98 is so outdated nothing is really made for it anymore (like is now the case with Win95).

Why have the newest version of MS Word if your current version does all you could want and more?

That, and I don't trust the new OS versions coming from MS. I hear so much nonsense about spying features (especially with this new Homeland Security crap) that I don't trust them until I get the all-clear from someone I'd trust. I'm sorry if I don't find Bill Gates credible. :FRlol:

Windows 2k = No More Blue Screen of Death

If you have window 98 you are gonna that damn blue screen of death because that's just the way the code was written. It doesn't manage the memory well. Basically you can leave a computer on for weeks running win 2k without having to reboot. Plus it just runs faster.

Just trying to inform people :) People must us to learn Google. and then dig deeper if they first do not find what they look for :)

Well, Dcup, since the cat's out of the bag, other than changing OS, is there a way to disable what ADVAPI.DLL does?

I'm not worried about what it does as I don't expect anything going across the Internet to be secure from the government anyhow via IE or Netscape.

Unless, of course, it overrides my PCCrypto program too.

Perhaps....

Well, that is a plus, but I don't leave my system on when I'm not using it (conserve power, mostly). That's probably why I've not noticed a difference.
