Each party's base desires the government to control certain aspects of life and society. Which aspects are controlled are the only difference between the two because neither one wants the government to have less power as a whole.

a national sales tax makes a lot more sense in a consumer-oriented society like ours...for example, drug dealers, illegal aliens and welfare cheats don't pay taxes (flat or otherwise), but they sure as fuck like to spend their money on "stuff".

Example - new Jeans, $80 + 20% tax
Find some loop hole to sell/transfer to a subsidiary or partner in crime and get them marked as used (maybe pay a messican to stick a foot in each pair), $74 + no tax.

2nd hand sales? other than yard sales, in PA (and every other state) these are treated just like original sales...if the item is subject to sales tax, then tax is collected and remitted.

Paying the same tax % does not equal paying the same taxes, not by any stretch whatsoever. 20% of $200,000 is way more than 20% of $20,000. I really hate that argument.
