Out of curiosity, why do revolvers still exist?

Aren't thy obsolete in a way?

What is the pros/cons of standard semi automatic handgun and a revolver?

lets hear em!

1. Ease of use
2. A revolver has less working parts, therefor easier to clean and/or fix.
3. Personal preference
4. A revolver may be good in some circumstances while a semi-auto would be better in others. The right tool for the job

I think semi's a WAY cooler, just for the record

Can you please elaborate on #4 please.

Personally I think the revolvers are cool, because you can play Russian Roullete with it.

Many old school people believe a revolver to be infallable(Which it is) where a semi-auto can jam or fail to feed.

Some cheaper autos can be picky with specific types of ammo and different bullet shapes.

Mad

I think revolvers look cooler, but they have smaller magazines, well they don't really have magazines, but you know what I mean, Manny78 knows a lot about this stuff

Oh and anyone who plays Russian Roulette is an idiot.

Revolvers:

+ easy to use.

+ Interesting loads. For example the .357 magnum/.38 special is the most versatile to this day.

+ Snubbies are useful (ankle carry) in some situation

+ A revolver will never jam. If it doesnt fire at a given round, no prob, just pull the trigger again and wait for the next one.

- only 5-7 rounds depending on the size model.

- usually heavier.

- forget about putting a silencer on it

- reloading takes longer

Auto-pistols

+ high capacity magazine

+ some good loads and widespread (9mm, .40S&W, .45 ACP)

+ silencer possibility

+ fast reloading

- may jam, and it aint funny at all

- more parts so not that easy

What are you seriously planning to do ?

There arent any silencers for revolvers?
I guess I have to make it myself then.

Also are silencers ever sold or are they illeagal?

thanks.

I dont want to wake up my neighbors when I shoot indoors at empty cans in the basement.

There is a space between the cylinder head (The wheel in wheelgun) and the barrel, alot of noise and flash will come from here.

A revolver can't be silenced despite what you see in movies.

the coolest gun i've ever shot by far was a .44 mag. made the trees shake and bent the supposedly dent-proof target i had

Revolvers get a plus for reliability, however I don't think a pistol like a glock is very likely to jam. In 1990 a Glock 17 fired 10,000 rounds in 3 hours and 45 minutes. The weapon was assembled from 20 pistols with the parts mixed together, so witnesses saw it was not a specially selected pistol.

No silencer for revolvers and calibers such as .357 magnum. Anyway to silence a magnum you'd need to get a subsonic round making the whole idea worthless.

Silencers are legal in some states I think. Even for hunting.

Revolvers can and do jam. A revolver that has too close tolerances and hot loads will get very hot and the revolver will not be able to chamber the next round.

Damn big Satan you beat me to it-------- Yes revolvers do jam,i have personal experience with one .A friend sold me his Smith & Weston 38 he failed to tell me it had a problem, everytime i shot more than a couple of rounds it jammed, the hammer would not, pull back ,the barrel would not turn or open outward basicaly the gun as a whole was stuck at that point, after acquiring a small screwdriver i discovered the firing pin did not return to its original position jamming the gun....good old WD 40 fixed that!!! heh heh!!

Silencers are legal to own just like a machine gun is. You follow the red tape laid out by the ATF. Certain manufacturers are allowed to make new silencers. You can pick up a suppressed Ruger 22 for about 700 + the 200 ATF fee. This is the gun you've probably seen in movies. There are plenty of websites out there for this stuff. Some states do make these types of weapons illegal, but for the most part it's legit. If you have 1500 bucks you can pick up a full auto Mac-10.

REVOLVER
*Positive,
Rarely if ever jams
Easy to use
*Negative
Less capacity in number of rounds available(6 max)

Auto
*Positive
More capacity in number of rounds (up to 15 in parabellum)
Easier to holster/draw/conceal due to being flat sided
Faster/Easier to reload with spare clip
*Negative
Can Jam, especially the cheaper built ones and larger calibers
More working/moving parts to learn or to fail

Revolvers are made in 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 12 round capacities. Currently you can get a 7 and 8 shot .357. 10 and 12 shot gats are .22's.

New auto's are only available with 10 round mags thanks to clinton. You can purchase pre-ban high capacity mags but they are usually shit. Factory pre-ban high capacity mags are hard to find and if you do, they are worn out.

Correct on the revolver comment, but I was referring to the more common revolver models out there.

That's the first time I've seen someone call Brownings and Berettas "Shit"

Check with your state first though so you know what you're getting into. I know paladinpress sells books on how to make revolvers.... but they all say for educational purposes only, methinks for a reason.
