What is Flax used for in our bodybuilding world?

Before bed, mainly.

Working backwards, to your first question, it contains EFAs (essential fatty acids). Omega-3 fatty acids aren't found in a typical person's daily diet. These are great to boost testosterone levels, improve chemical regulations in your body (I believe, don't quote me, look it up), help your skin (so I've heard), and improve your brain's ability to function. If nothing else, it's more easy calories with more testosterone production. Do it.

Man, I didn't even read a lot on that. I saw the cholestrol and that turned me off right away. You could use it I guess, but I'd go to your nearest Costco or Price Club or BJs. Buy a jar of Fish Oil Concentrate capsules. 1000 mg a serving. 2 softgels is a serving. Have 6 servings a day. That'll be equal to a tbsp of UDO's or Flax Oil, which are as good as it gets.

Why is flax better used before bed than at any other time of day? Clearly post-workout is a poor time, but other than that I can't see the difference.

Well first off, it's best before bed because you want to slow protein digestion at night. Some EFA along with a slow digesting protein source, like tuna, will help prevent nightly catabolism.

Second, for myself at least, my early meals consist of carbs. You don't want fats in your first meal anyway, because after a night time fast, you want protein into your system A.S.A.P., thus a scoop of whey with my morning eggs. The other meals in the AM tend to be carbs, so I don't eat them late at night and don't store as fat.

That second one is dispelled if you don't buy into avoiding the mix of carbs and fats though. In the end, when isn't going to make the big difference. Whether or not you use it will, and even that won't be huge. Don't fret over small things.
