What is "Emo" music?

I don't understand what "emo" means? Is it some dreary limp wristed music for emotional guys or something?

I asked a few different girls what kind of music they listen to now and thats what they said. I must be getting out of touch because i am still listening to Danzig & Type O Negative.

Yeah, and what does it mean when someone describes their lifestyle as emo. Like I've heard people on the radio saying, "I'm emo."

I really dont like that word, I am a huge punk fan. Now all the clothes/styles/music I have are being called "emo". It seems people are totaly changing "punk" to "emo". emo are bands like saves the day, the getup kids, etc. underlining is punk, but music is more soft, melodic, and usually has a better message than reg punk.

Kind of like the difference between rap and hip-hop
