What is a hero?

It seems as though anyone working in the government in the United States is a hero when they die

I can understand the Firefighters and Police Officers from 9/11 being hero's but they are calling the astronaughts who died hero's.

what makes them so,they didnt died saving anyone or doing anything that I consider a hero

anyone care to elaborate

In most cultures, people that die an untimely death are given a little respect. It seems that it has gotten a bit out of hand lately.
