If I have really really good speed from the floor to my knees in my deadlift, then where does it mean that I'm strong? I was thinking it means that my hams/hips have gotten a lot more powerful, since I've been hitting them a lot more.

Nonerz, do you pull sumo?

When I pull sumo, I am weak off the floor and relatively strong @ the lockout... opposite for when I pull conventional.

I'm feel weakest right off the floor with my wide sumo style but if it breaks the ground it is OWNED! :)

Yep! I'm a sumo girl. The hardest part is the first 2-3 inches...after that it's mine.

Quads? Really?

yep, i have very strong quads, hamstrings, and back. i can get most anything i want to pull off the ground and too my knees, just locking out can be a problem, this it where the hips/glutes come in to play.

bigger guys like you and me usually deadlift like this.

Legs wide ......... first 2-3 inches........ then all mine.............. Oh! We are talking about deadlifts????? ;) ;) ;) ;)

Nonerz and Cuthbert, I pull sumo and that seems to be my weakest, too. If I can make it to the halfway point I have it. No problem locking out (yet).

thats typically the characteristics if each style of pulling. usually with conventional its easy to get off the floor but can be hard at lockout. with sumo it harder to get off the floor and lockout is the easier part. some people will be different but thats what ive noticed among different styles of pullers.

yep - that's why I asked.

The strange thing for me is that the lifts are literally 5lbs apart, which is odd. It's also annoying because I dont know which I should pull in meets.

youll have to see in time which style of pulling is going to be affected more by the squat. see how the squat taxes you, and then see which style of pull is better after youve squatted.

I use conventional, atleast I think so, legs close then shoulder width and arms outside of legs. haha Maybe its just my convention? haha Pulling off the floor is by far hardest for me,once its over the knees I lean back and pull/shrug that shit and its over.

You and slobberknocker! I knew that it would get twisted somehow! That's okay, my mind was in the gutter, right there with you!

Okay, so to improve your lockout, rack pulls are the thing right?

What about for those of us who are weaker off the floor?

yes rack lockouts will help your lockout. but MORE important than doing those, you need a stronger butt and hips. those are what you use to lockout.

if your weak off the floor you need speed pulls, and to pull of a box. to be strong off the floor you need a strong back and strong set of legs.

I figured that! Would that mean I'm weak in my quads? Hams? Both?

Should I do these sumo or conventional?
