Give me a short and sweet description on what globalization means to you. We have all heard this term and it has been crammed down our throats. This has recently become an immense academic debate. Scholars can't agree with anything. . anyway chip in your thoughts.

Literally: to make global or worldwide

To me personally...it means a loss of indigenous culture as western values, products, and ideas propagate across the globe. It also means corporations taking advantage of third world countries for American profit.

It means American workers will be put in direct competition with their chinese etc. counterparts. Even more so than now. All Americans will suffer, even those of you that think it doesnt apply to you because you sit behind a desk.
If you think im nuts, just look around. It's already happening. My suggestion: stop mowing your grass, for it may become an important food source for you and your family in the future.
Some of you will go off the deep end here im sure to support free trade etc. Take a step backwards and remember who you are would you? Rule 1. Take care of your own first.

goods are made where its most efficient to make them. nations's borders are artificals constructs, not reflecting geography, climate or people's skills. it would be redicolous if every tiny nation has its own automobile-, film-, chip-, television-, ... - industry ... it is impossible to source every raw material in every country. not every nation has skiing resorts or beaches for tourism.

globalization is nothing new, world trade as a percentage of world output was bigger in 1900 than today. WWI lead to protectionist policies, WWII and the cold war also cut trade paths. Advances in information and transportation technology, the fall of the Soviet empire and GATT/WTO efforts brought trade levels back up.

glob. increases competition which is a good thing for prosperity. your income is threatened by someone across the globe who might do the same thing cheaper but you also can export your goods to the whole world and no just your home country. The US is the biggest (or second?) biggest exporter in the world. Of course, imports are also high but imports consist of those good who are made cheaper in a foreign country then in the US. Import barriers force the US consumer to pay more thus decreasing his wealth. The recently imposed tariffs on foreign made steel is such an example: several thousand steel workers keep their jobs but 280 million people face price increases (or lack of price decrases) because everything made of steel gets more expensive. It would have been better to either close down those inefficient steel mills and retrain the workers to make something more valuable or invest into the industry to produce steel more expensive.

This could give you teh answer:

what is globalization?

At a top political and economic level, globalization is the process of denationalization of markets, politics and legal systems, i.e., the rise of the so-called global economy. The consequences of this political and economic restructuring on local economies, human welfare and environment are the subject of an open debate among international organizations, governmental institutions and the academic world. This portal does not take part in this debate or offer any information on this matter.

At a business level, we talk of globalization when companies decide to take part in the emerging global economy and establish themselves in foreign markets. First they will adapt their products or services to the final user's linguistic and cultural requirements. Then, they might take advantage of the Internet revolution and establish a virtual presence on the international marketplace with a multilingual corporate web site or even as an e-business.

In the context of this portal, globalization is the process of adapting software applications and web sites, so that they are linguistically and functionally suitable for use in more than one country. Overall, globalization requires a combination of linguistic, engineering and marketing knowledge that is not easily available.
