Ive smoked for about 7 years now, and ive always found that a good bong will get me higher, and theyre more pleasant to, but what exactly do they do???
What does a bong do??

warm water will take out some of the excess bad stuff in the smoke and it will collect in the water. cold water will cool the smoke and make it easier to inhale large amounts of it.
alcohol on the other hand will strips the thc out and leave in lots of the bad stuff, so your hit has very little good stuff but if you drink the alcohol, you then get the thc (along with the other disgusting stuff in it like tar).
the concepts here are why you will frequently see multi-stage bongs and also why you shouldn't do beer bongs nor vodka bongs.

it just means the hit wasn't as strong as it could have been.

I've seen people do it with everything from soda to vodka, 40s and even wine coolers.
I've only done it with multistages b/c I had fun figuring out the enginering involved. one with cool water, another with ice water, another with warm/hot water.
I've posted about it before but we called it the aquarium b/c it was made from aquarium parts and 2 liter coke bottles. we hooked up aquarium pumps to it and you could get some massive hits, but when those finally broke and the seals gave out, then you mainly got high from the amount of force it took to draw on it - you could have no weed in it at all and feel high as fuck.
I personally somehow don't do weed right and never feel anything from it.
if I'm drunk it makes me feel sober and sleepy.
if I'm sober it makes me really hungry and paranoid that everyone knows that. but I feel no high sensation.
oh well, at least my occular pressure was low.

I was talking about a beer funnel, i guess not a smoking bong.
Also, the ice-intercooled bong was the same design with aquarium siphon and the tubing wrapped in a coil in a tupperware container, then back out for the pipe to stick in. Fill the container up with water and throw it in the freezer and let it freeze. Then pull it out, pop inthe pipe, and you will get the biggest, coldest rips ever. OH yeah, and put a small cut in the tube by where the pipe fits in the tube for a carb.

ours was a seven stage octopus that took up the entire floor of my friends dorm room. it was great for about 2 days and then we got drunk and ended up sort of breaking it and then it didn't work so well. it only cost like $20 to make.
as for funneling, I've done that a couple of times, as long as it isn't too many beers it is actually kind of a pleasant sensation - but if it is too many beers for my stomach, then they just play tag with my stomach and then run away back up my throat and that is no fun.
