is a comfortbale income to live on not counting amounts put away for retirement, i don't see why people bitch so much i just want your opinions on a decent income for say wife and 1 or 2 kids

It depends on where you live. The cost of living is different in each state of the US. I live in the suburbs of New York. My income combined with my husband's is $112,000. Basically that's enough to pay our bills, our mortgage, groceries, dogs and kitty stuff, cars. That's about it. We really don't have much left over for savings which is really scary. I think the general rule to feel comfortable is that you should have 3 months salary in the bank, just incase. I hope to get a raise soon or to find a better paying job. My husband is not eligible for a raise until 2004.

Oh and every year I get like a 1k raise for the cost of living increase.

but in terms of the current economic status of our country, i believe making 80 K + would be comfortable.

you will be able to buy a nice four bedroom 2 1/2 bath house (interest rates and mortgages are awesome these days) and at least 2 mid range luxury cars (honda accord, toyota avalon, nissan maxima, etc)

that should get you until your kids are 18...
