What do you know about anti-depressants...?

many of them have side effects and are hard to wean yourself off of....

people i know who have used antidepressants said when they were on them their emotions were "numbed"...they no longer felt the sadness or listlessness but feelings of happiness weren't as intense either...

Paxil increases the incidence of suicide by an astronomical amount .

the problem is all lead to SOME degree of apathy

Wellbutrin is they say, the best on the market in terms of sides

Depends on how they effect you. Sometimes, being a zombie is better then walking into a school with an automatic rifle.

ok from my experience, paxil made me extra lazy, i didnt want to get out of bed and for the first time in my life i could go days without sex withouht my girlfriend at the time.

my opinion is dont take unless you have serious chronic depression. too many sides. society has been fooled, the drug companies are making millions off the new SSRI's, they strategically formulated a condition and pill to make millions.

But for people who tend towards anxiety wellbutrin is a BAD idea. It is too "upper" for some people. I'd sit for hours shaking in the doorway of my bedroom daily when I was on it. It made me insane.

There's almost nothing I haven't taken. They kept wanting to put me on lithium and I wouldn't go for that. I was off for a long while and finally went back onto celexa a few months ago. Now I feel more myself. My only side with this is insomnia and melatonin has helped me.

It's also the only one I've taken that hasn't killed my sex drive. I always found that to be a very depressing side.

i think that the best out there is strattera and there is another that starts with a c....paxil sucks and lithium is addictive.

I agree that society has been fooled and we aren't taught to cope (or don't learn ourselves). But, sometimes, we are just looking for a way out for some peace (temporary as it might be) as suicide would just be a long term solution and affect those around us.

also, heavily emphasize the positive effect on depression of a daily exercise regimen, it has been proven over and over again. Best of luck with this.
That's true. The gym is an excellent escape. But, you can't be at the gym all the time.

I think that some people legitimately need them though. I hate being on anything and tend to go on and off. I've done it for years. And I've been through therapy. I have learned coping skills.

But when you're sitting at your desk and are hit with level 10 horrible panic for NO reason and just want to scream and hide or something, it's not normal. When you're so anxious for no reason at all that you are isolating yourself and nervous around everyone, I'm not sure any amount of therapy will help. At least it hasn't for me.

And I've always deemed myself somewhat weak for needing help. But I've finally come to a point where I was doing everything I could for a couple of years to do it on my own and I was barely functioning. I can't begin to explain how bad it's been or how insane it's made me feel.

I think some people are happy to just take something and hope to not feel bad. I think that low times are just a part of life but if that kind of stuff takes over and really robs you of the ability to enjoy anything in your life or even just being able to sit and read without being horribly horribly anxious without reason, I think sometime drugs are the option.

Physiologic exercise effects are not all instantaneous rather many are transient throughout the day.

I agree.......I take xanax for anxiety and it has helped me improve my life 100%

1) many anti-depressants don't work until you get a theraputic level in your bloodstream

2) many cause weight gain

Dear beautiful Raina,

You make a great point and I agree totally, I was suggesting exercise as an adjunct to medication, because as the true formula lies in "mnd, body and spirit".

If you ever need a hug, please feel free to ask :p

Is not a anti-depressant. It is a mood stabilizer.

Most "anti-depressant" drugs on the market are like a mood-lobotomy. For a percentage of people they make packing on fat way too easy. Most doctors are not exactly sure by what mechanism. They can really do a number on your brain - permanently. If any of them really worked well and were safe they would be illegal.

Oh I full agree that exercise makes one feel better. I think that it is a great way to reduce stress and I think that for some people who have lives in turmoil, a gym schedule can be a beginning to normalizing a schedule. There's something comforting in stability.

Cripes. How do I get into this line?

lol...or on second though...Raina is a pretty good anti-depressant.

i agree with alot of comments here but it seems like everyone and thier grandma is taking SSRI's now. i mean everyone talks about depression now. i just dont agree with whats going on giving so many kids prescriptions and so many alduts anti-depressants. i think both are over prescribed and that the drug companies are loving it.

there are people who need meds, but i dont believe near as many that are getting them. and the sides can be very bad.

theyve demonized meds like xanax, when actually its very good with low sides. ofcourse its for anxiety but thier prescribing SSRI's for anxieties as well.

and ive used paxil, zoloft and some others, but i dont really need them. i wanted an anti axiety thats what he prescribed. finnally i found a doc to give me xanax, way better when i use it.

It's amazing that the opinion is so varied on anti depressants. For a long while I've been debating on whether to go to a doctor because of my problems. Some days I'll feel great and have no problems believing people really like me and want to be around me. Others I'm a wreck and don't have the courage to leave the house. I really couldn't say it's more one way than the other. Also I can't tell if this kind of condition needs medical attention. I'd like to be more on an even level day to day though to tell you the truth...

You peeps are lucky. I bet your insurance pays for your drugs.
I don't have a doctor so I get my goods ala black market.

I know that the dizzy feeling people get on zoloft is feeling your synapses firing in a location in your brain that your not used to.

Must be something very bad to depress someone that's had their ass kissed by the opposite sex, most of thier life.

I don't like doctors. My problems are my business, and I don't want it on paper that I'm a fucked up as I am.

Don't worry, those prescription happy docs are well taken care of by the pharma companies. They often get more than just pens, clocks, and clipboards as incentives.
