What do you guys lift for?

keasbey

me and my buddy were lifting and hes not really one of those motivating lifting buddies.. which i deal with but is kinda ruff when you have one of those days where your not into it and his lack of drive makes it worse.. anyway we were talking about the lifts we do and was explaining how i use lifting as a way to better enhance somthign outside of the gym. and he didnt really have that so it was kinda depressing.. anyway so my question is what do you guys lift for? is it a sport/activity/hobby you do that if you were stronger or more fit youd dominate at it?

for me i started rock climbing about a year ago and when i lift i base my achievements on how much ive improved in that.

Honestly, I want to be a freak. I want to be that guy that walks into a crowd of 1000 people and everybody says "Holy shit" and breaks their necks staring. Dont care what it takes to get there, dont care what the price is. I'm in this thing for real

thanx alot bro. but the rest of me still needs to catch up to my back. I used to be a swimmer, I think that has alot to do with it maybe. And I deadlift religiously. Deadlifts are key, I've never seen anybody pulling 500-600 lbs with a shitty looking back. A lean 250 is very difficult, good luck. I dont believe you can do it w/out HGH or IGF-1 unless your genetics are superhuman. Dorian used to step onstage around 240, along with Lee Haney, Arnold Schwarzenegger, hell even Dennis Wolf is only 250 ish on stage, and he's a fucking freak!!! 250 is HUGE when your bf is below 7-8%. You and me both bro

same here... right now because of various unavoidable reasons it's been difficult for me to steadily move to my year end goal of 240 (currently sitting at 215-220) at around 13%. but i'll get there - i know i will. unfortunately i have to add that i need to be very healthy too (i'm on anti hypertensives) so i have to hit that cardio and stay quite lean even while bulking :(

i lift for me. i like having big muscles. i could really care less about the strength aspect. i am more or less feeding my own vanity. i have thought about competing but i am not willing to pay any price so it depends on how good i can get.

That "price" can be pretty high, in some cases it cost your life.

I train for myself, the results in the mirror, and nothing feels better then making a new PR in one of the big lifts (especially if it's a gym record).

Aside from the above I have also benefited from it in some very important ways. First, while I was on prednazone, it has horrible side effects (muscle atrophy and bone density loss (osteoperosis), training heavy helped me keep most of my bone density while on the drug. My doctors told me that if I wasn't lifting heavy I would have lost a lot more bone density then I did while on this drug. That alone is a huge benefit of lifting.

Also I notice it in sports, when I used to play rugby it deffinately helped, and now it helps a lot in soccer, being able to plysically out match someone gives you a huge advantage.

I don't want to be 240 5% BF as all that mass on my 5'-6" frame would really hinder my other hobbies (motorcycle racing, soccer etc.). I don't really have any set weight I want to be at, the weight will go on with the muscle. I do have strength goals I would like to reach by the end of the year.

I'm lifting primarily for strength but have set a goal of 300+lbs. I know it's heavy but I'm already 225lbs and am quite sure I will need a huge size boost to get a huge strength boost. That is the main motivation plus I find it fascinating to conintually get bigger and stronger. If I start loosing my walking speed weight gain time will be over though.

you could always switch back to rugby (not at that bf% though).... i keep pondering joining the local rugby team - but the girlfriend will have none of it.... would have me spending time away from her over the weekends :D plus she feels that after the game the boys are going to get themselves some hookers :o

Strength and looks. I want to be stronger than the next guy and I want to be more appealing to the ladies than the next guy.

I would love to play Rugby again, but it's not worth the risk as you can't gain bone density back what ever I have lost is gone. I don't want to take the risk of breaking something serious.

As for Rughy and the hookers, it's all good. Rugby is all about drinking beer after words and partying, hookers would be par for the course, lol. There was one tournament we would enter every year. It's a 7's tournament. There would be mens and womens teams at this tourny. The old saying goes, if you went to the tourny and didn't get laid you're gay. Good times.

I started lifting in the 70s. I've been in combat sports since 74 or so... and back then the philosophy was that weight lifting was to enhance sports.

We didn't have strong man or PL much then... and bodybuilding wasn't on the map like it is today. We called ourselves "weight lifters" not power lifters or body builders... and everybody lifted to get stronger for their sport.

Then, after the movie PUMPING IRON came out... and CONAN got big... and Arnold became "the Man" bodybuilding splurged on to the scene as its own animal... and PL started to get a lot of respect.

I honestly think the next legend sport will be strong man. It has established a significant base, and before too much longer this generation is going to produce a personality like Arnold or Steve Reeves who is a standout strong man... and it will launch a new era of strength sports.

i know i have alot of respect for the strongman competitions but for me that isnt a possiblity so i enjoy the more off competetions like ninja warrior.. for me that would be somthing to be sweet to try and get better at.. but its in japan.. i dont see it coming to the states anytime soon but i was really hoping american gladiators wasnt as cheesy as it is :( but it would be sweet if strongman exploded

Japan has the best "competation" shows like this.

EDIT:

Here's a better vid, this guy makes it to the 3rd and final stage. Talk about grip strength.

yeah ninja warrior is a different type of strength.. given out of the 100 competetiors only like 8 ever move past the 1st stage so the beginning is always a laugh. but its more body weight strength and grip and odd movements u wont typically do day to day.

has anyone ever finished the course? How many stages are there?

i lift to become a freak. I want people to stare and talk quite when i walk by. i want to get big and then even bigger. and I have no clue what i would do with my time if i didnt go to the gym.

yeah i think 2 guys have finished it all.. theres 4 stages 1st is timed 2nd is timed 3rd u have no time but they dont rest as long as ud think some would and the final stage is
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpL65uyU9yc

ignore the annoying kid it starts around 2:05 it consists of a 12.5 metres (41 ft) Spider Climb followed by a 10 metres (33 ft) Rope Climb. (wikipedia) i think u have 30 seconds to complete this all in and there no stopping for weather and all of the events i believe are ran in 1 day so i dont think you get days to rest up from previous events

Thanksf or the link. Shows like that are so much better then Amercan gladiator. Unfortunately the north americans are all about "bigger is better" and always try to sensationalize everything.

Stuff like ninja Warrior is all body weight training, I don't believe many if any are into those kinds of feats, they all want to get bigger and lift heavy weights (myself included).

YEah, it's pretty huge, but I am tall. Arnold competed at like 230 didn't he?

I would want to compete around the same, but off season like 250 without being very fat nor extremely ripped. just lean, like 12%. I'm 10% and 220 right now. a few more years, and I'll be there.
