What do you do with comments about your work out?

I have been working out for awhile, just started hitting the diet hard, I am trying to get to about 15-20% BF. I am on the right track...My question is not about diet and working out, but what do you do when people who don't even work out or watch their diet comment about how you are eating and exercising. It just pisses me off, I am 100% hispanic, and have a big family, and I am critisized for working out and watching what I eat.....

WHAT IS UP WITH THAT??????????? DOES ANYONE ELSE GET THIS???????

Also, I have co-workers who look like crap, but have the nerve to tell me that I am eating to much, and my protein shakes are making me fat, and I am never going to lose weight....URRRRRRRRRRRRRR I really just want to tell them all to F___ OFF!

I am sorry, I just wondered if anyone else got this crap....I hear it all the time, and it is discouraging sometimes.

I mean I am by no means where I want to be, I am still working off baby fat from my 3 year olds pregnancy, so I am not a hard body or a stick figure, but I know what I need to do, and am doing it....I just get so frustrated when people that are supposed to be your support system, just knock you down, instead of saying your doing good, or keep it up.

Well, anyway, I just had to vent, thanks ladies for hearing me out. :qt:

There's three ways you deal w/ it:

1) Turn it around on them - "My shake is making me fat? How do you figure that?" -- make them defend their claims. They usually don't know what they are talking about.

2) Say, "Actually I've got great energy, dropping bodyfat and its all working as planned. I feel great! BTw, How's that donut working for ya?" If they want to get into the discussion - the usual - you need to eat to burn fat efficiently. if you starve yourself then you are just skinny fat, etc etc etc.

3) Ignore them / tell them to fuck off / mind their own business / why do they care / etc. Or just laugh... as above -- I see that donut is workign well for ya.

Its always amazing how no one comments on the masses of flabby people shoveling down fast food, but those same people seem so concerned about how healthy people eat. Never understood it. I guess when something is not the norm (i.e. eatign other than fast food) people have to comment. Bad reflection of our society.

They are displacing their insecurities/failings/miserable lives onto you - thus by putting YOU down - they feel better about themselves.

I heard it from the people I used to work with - so I feel ya.

Oh and what Sassy said.

Thank you all, You really made me laugh........I FEEL ALOT BETTER.....Oh, I forgot the latest comment I got, was why do you lift weights you are going to look like a man??

I was told that if I continue to lift weights that I am going to look like a man, and never look feminine...I just laughed in this persons face....as my husband was right next to me, he and I train together, he is a bodybuilder. He looked at her and looked at me and said my wife is all women......hahahahaha

Sounds like you just need to keep coming here for your support. Everyone here is very helpful. There are a lot of different variations of diet and training, and I'm sure if you keep coming here and asking questions, you'll be all dialed in!!!!!!! :)

Just look at the uneducated, know-it-all's and smile. Pretty soon they'll be EATING their words!

And....congratulations on taking your first steps toward a better lifestyle. You'll be so happy you made the effort when you start seeing those results.

.....Your doing good! Keep it up!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

They won't be saying that for long when your goals have been met.

Been there and heard all that jumbo.. then had the same people asking me what I did to lose all that weight.

It'll slap them in the face soon enough then you can just laugh.

Thank you!! I will keep it up....I started at a size 18 and bf of 39%...Now I am like a size 14 and a bf of 30%, slowly going down, but nonetheless still going down....YEAHHHHHHHHH :qt: ;)

It is truly mind-boggling how the general populous is so ignorant. Honestly the one thing I've been waiting for the opportunity to do is if I get asked anything, particularly "weight lifting will make you look like a man" -- two things --

1) Do I look like a man to you? (i.e. I've been lifting for 23 yrs)

2) Why is that? -- you know that look they are givign you when they ask stupid things or make stupid statements like its a fact, throw it back at them -- like why is it you think that? On what piece of misinformation are you basing that ludacris statement? Then see if they can answer , i.e. prove there's actually some logic behind the ignorant statement. The simple answer is women dont' have enough testosterone to do that anyway.

Thanks Sassy.....I have been lifting for along time off and on for about like 10 years....I have never really met my goal. I have always enjoyed learning about proper nutrition and lifting...I have the knowledge in my head, but I don't look like I know what I am talking about...Here is something that u may have a comment on....

My sister, is trying to diet with all kinds of yo/yo crap...I gave her a work out plan and diet to follow, it worked for me, I told her try it for about 2-3 months, see what you think....She blew me off, then a trainer told her the same thing that I told her. She told me that she didn't listen to me, because I don't look like I know what I am talking about, and that people who know about diet and excercise have to be super fit looking...God forbid that I myself know anything....kinda bumbed me out, when that came from my own sister....Even after I lost tons of bf and toned up my body, I was still not good enough for her to take my advice....

Go Figure......

I've had that question several times about why I'm eating this or that, why I eat every 3-4 hours, why drink protein shakes, why I lift weights 5 days a week, etc... The best way I've found to deal with this is to carry a pic around of me when I was 50 pounds heavier and wearing size 18 clothing. At the very least, they won't ask you again. In the end, most end up asking for advice and you can tell them, in the words of Shadow:

STFU and Train!

LMAO!! This literally just happened to me so have to share:

I'm sat in my office with meal number 2 in front of me; 1/2 cup cottage cheese, 1/2 cup blueberries and I'm sucking on a tbsp of peanut butter. My boss comes in and says, didn't you have time for breakfast this morning? I say yes, this is my next meal. So he says, I thought you said you were on a diet. (Well, I never actually used those words but I came back to work on Monday after another chest infection and made a comment on how I'm determined to get healthy, lose fat etc.) So I said, yes, I'm determined to eat right. He said, is that peanut butter? I said, uh huh. Then he said (I can't believe it), well, you'll be out of those pants in a month if you keep going like that.

OMG!!!!! Normally I would have wanted to hide in the bathroom and cry (too sensitive I guess) but this time, because my head is in the right place, I just shrugged and smiled sweetly, thinking I'll show you, you loser. Yes, I will be out of those pants (maybe longer than a month though) but for completely the opposite reason.

F--- these idiot uninformed people. We know what we're doing.

Oh my god that is so me... I get the same comments and crazy looks. No I do not look like a fitness model , but I absolutely KNOW what I am talking about , because like anything else you do in life , you educate yourself first. I have read numerous books , articles , and so forth on the subject of diet and excercise , I just haven't had the "will power" up til now to put all into effect. But as it was said before , they will be eating thier words and asking for our advice soon enough :)

P.S. When it all really gets to you try taking a boxing/kickboxing class. I started taking them at my gym , and it is not only a hell of a workout , but hitting and kicking that bag is the best for relieving stress :smash:

At the end of the day, whatever people think of it, the lifestyle does the followign for me (and FOR ME is the only thing that matters):

- keeps me grounded
- helps me deal w/ stress
- is good for me -- a clean diet WILL change your whole outlook on life
- with consistency the results will show
- I happened to like how my back & arms respond to lifting.
- I have gotten an amazing sense of self & self-confidence from it
- this is knowledge that is mine for the rest of my life.
- I will have a strong enough body that I will be driving a Harley, wearing leathers & listening to old KISS music when I'm 90 and the lazy asses around me will be bedridden & droolign on themselves.

And finally, if you don't like it, don''t muthafuckin look at it. :)

I tend to take people's ridiculous, ignorant or negative comments and turn them into positive energy/motiviation, if I don't brush them off compeltely. I'm in shape, they're not, so I obviously know what I'm doing. I'm 24, I'm an athlete, I train 1.5-3 hours a day 5-6 days a week, I've been doing it since I was 9 years old, and I'll still be doing it when I'm 80 years old.

so true! I used to get this from my Mom & shes not in great shape, but really thin because she never eats!!! She thinks my callouses from deadlifting are "hideous" & eating anything more than a salad is un-ladylike. Totally different mentality i gues, but still i sometimes wanna say- "Mom stfu!" LOL
