What do you consider rich?

I know rich is a generic term but is someone with a million dollars considered rich or 50 million?
IMO, rich is when you have enough income-producing assets to support essentially anything you want or need (within reason). Examples:

1) You own your own stable, mature business that produces a strong, regular income and cash flow.

2) You own a broad portfolio of stocks and bonds that produce a strong, regular cash flow.

3) You are a physician with an established practice and a solid patient base that produces a regular cash flow. (in this case, the "asset" is the MD himself)

Stuff like that!

I don't think it's a number... think of it as a cash flow that would meet every need you'd reasonably have.

i agree, if you can go out and shop and not think gee can i afford that

If you can go to the mall and shop instead of walmart
now that, to me, is rich

Enough to live comfortably, and have enough left over to give to worthwhile causes.

I used to think differently on this subject until I read about Jon M. Huntsman Sr. The guy is a great role model.

According to the US gov't, 1 million is considered wealthy. My parents are worth around 3, and I assure you it's not wealthy. 3 million can be blown VERY easily. Their bldg a new house next to me, got a couple cars, went on a couple vacations, had an operation insurance wouldnt cover...........$500,000.00 is gone already.

Wealth is blowing $ with no consequences. After seeing my parents deal with it I would consider 50 million on the lower limits.

Anyone having more money then me..... which makes 95% of all of you rich ;)

Seriously... rich to me doesn't even involve money, its being happy with what you have, loving and being loved.

When your discretionary spending (everyday spending) and monthly financial obligations (Bills) do not exceed your savings.

then again, this can be deemed as living within your means.

So it does not make a difference if you have $1mil or $100bil....

bottom line if you are living within your means.....IMO you are rich !

But I have seen some well off people, have their net worth deduced to damn near poverty as a result of unexpected medical issues, Market downturn and what have you.

or even having to take care of elderly parents....or even a parent with alzheimers.

When you have a nice stash...you can forget about subsidized programs helping you out......and may have to rely on your own. Unless, you have a risk management plan and/or bought adequate LTC coverage expect some serious expenses down the line.

I have a client that sold his business (financial) for just under 1 billion (yah I didn't believe it either).

I still can hardly grasp that and considering they were well to do prior to the sale I just can't imagine their net worth.

They're nice people, their children and extended family - eh - they hang around to keep their bread buttered.

It's whole different world.

People like Bill Gates - eh it's almost not even real.

I guess really wealth is being able to keep the money you made in your lifetime.

being able to afford a house payment, car payment and a large pizza all in the same week; without having to balance my check book first.
