What do steroids do?

My neighbour is sick and has been given steroids to help with his cough. Got me wondering, what do they actually do? Why do bodybuilders use them? I assumed it they just allowed you to work harder which helped muscles grow faster. But is there more to it?

Corticosteroid vs anabolic steroid. Not even close...

It's not roid rage, I just don't like you...

Bustin' my ass so I can save yours...

Your neighbor is on a different type of steroid than The ones discussed here,
treating a cold at the first sign of symptoms with a steroid can greatly reduce the risk of asthma-related emergencies and trips to the hospital.

Researchers say major asthma attacks in children are usually triggered by respiratory infections, such as the common cold or the flu, and children under age 5 are five times as likely to be hospitalized as a result of asthma complications.
The reason steroids would have any effect on a sore throat at all is because they have potent anti-inflammatory properties. Something that seems to be overlooked by the study which involved over 700 people is this: steroids suppress the immune system. That's right, they'll knock that inflammation in the back of your throat out, but they'll also knock out your immunity. Sounds like a great way to get over a cold doesn't it?

in summary ,there are many types of steroids out there that do a specific job.

Corticosteroids such as betamethasone valerate have anti-inflammatory properties, they are linked with the hormone cortisol and are good for skin conditions such as dermatitis and psoriasis.
Too much absorption increases cortisol levels which can have its own side effects.
When used short term and at the right potency it is very effective and has a low chance of causing any noticeable sides.
But as noted above, this type of steroid is very different to anabolic steroids which bodybuilders use for muscle and strength gain.

everyone hit the nail on the head. cortico's are given (really too much by docs) to help people who have bronchitis or a virus/bacterial infection that makes it hard to breathe. i would never take one longer than a few days personally as they can screw you up bigtime if taken too long.. and they need to be tapered down.

as for ANABOLIC/ANDROGENIC steroids that we discuss on here as bodybuilders.. they are performance enhancing. they help us reach our goals, help us recover a tad quicker, help us push a little more weight, etc etc. they are a small fraction of what it takes to succeed though. its mostly diet and training, wish it was as easy as taking a pill then i wouldn't be eating a salad right now dry and about to go to the gym for an hour and do about 17 sets.
