what could i get to speed up my cable modem?

there is a method to open up the modem and basically take the limit off of it. it is wide open and will take in or put out as much as the system can handle (whcih is more than what you currently experience).
there are web sites out there that will show you how to do this.
the downside and the reason you shouldn't do this: the cable company can tell that you did it, and they tend to ban you and fine you heavily, perhaps even take legal action against you depending on how much traffic was involved.

i usually attach jumper cables to it and threaten more shocking unless it cooperates... tends to work.

it likely requires soldering or a vague knowledge of elctronics, and if you do it, they can detect it, and you will likely get caught.
the penalities are likely not pleasant either, and it is hard to deny it.
or you could look on ebay to see if someone is selling one - although they could be selling you just a normal one and you aren't likely to know the difference until you use it.

I have a cable modem and it is plenty fast for all I do, so I never really thought of risking it.
the people that do are usually running a site from their home, or they are getting/sharing a lot of movies.

well no i am talking about where i can just download shit but i got a cable a long time ago and i am tired of the way it is going so slow.it is like a 56k modem

if it was at one time fast, and is now slow - then it is likely do to the limiting factor of cable modem network topology.lilperronis said:

so what that means is that as more people in your neighborhood get cable modems and use them, your connection speed goes down.
no matter what software you install on your system, it will still be slow if that is the case.
