What are "hits" on a website?

I'm helping my girlfriend get her website up and running. I've gone to the stats tracking page... and I'm astounded at how many "hits" her site gets... I've also seen that the number of "visitors" is different than the number of hits.

What does "hits" mean? I'm assuming that "visitors" is the number of people who actually view the site.

Is there a website where they explain stat pages?

a hit is everytime the page is loaded. It can also be the number of times it comes up when searched for.

It can also sometimes mean the number of clicks on the main page going to other pages off of the main.htm..

Depends on how the tracking s/w is setup. Some will list the page
that was loaded and how many hits.
Some just track the hits on the Main, and others put them all into one bucket as total hits...
