I did my first cycle last year (at 41 yrs) but only after A LOT of book and internet study. This question/poll would have been much more interesting if it was about HGH instead of AAS. Thanks!

20-21 would be a good age to start but only if you have been eating and training properly for years, and not months.

Age is a poor indicator. Simply having "stopped making gains naturally" is a poor indicator as well IMO. Reaching one's "genetic limit" first is a nice thought, but unrealistic for various reasons.

A few prerequsites in my opinion;

#1 The person considering using AAS should have fully reached tanner stage 5. (This is a better indication of physical maturity than age)

#2 The person needs to have a comprehensive physical to establish health and screen for any medical concerns that may conflict with AAS use.

#3 The person should be have demonstrated a significant degree of physiological adaptation through natural diet and training before AAS use is considerd. Qulifiying "significant degree of physical adaptation" will vary among the population. In general, for the prospective bodybuilder, they should be able to demonstrate an ability to achieve effective muscle growth over time. Included in this criteria is a pre-existing degree of physical fitness.

#4 The individual shall have developed a fair degree of mental maturity, including the highest degree of respect for ones health.

I agree on this for most users. However anyone planning on being a professional athelete (bodybuilders and football players for example) can't afford to worry about things such as their health. The question comes down to one's goals. Personally, yes I worry about my health, and it limits what I use and how I use it, however I have no asperations of being earning my pro card. I'm playing the devil's advocate here, but the truth of the matter is, to make it in such sports, requires one to sacrifice their body.

To what degree shall health be put aside for the bodybuilder? Those who do choose sacrifice their health throguh the utilization of steroids, whatever their goals may be, are simply drug abusers. I do not support the use of steroids for such individuals.

SM, in all honesty, do you think someone can win the Olympia, for example, who has ANY concern for their health, or the damage they might be doing to their body? I agree, that they are drug abusers, but the piont it, it is impossible to attain that sort of goal if you are worried about living to 50.
