Brothers found shot in S.F. hotel
room
Third man missing in bizarre case

Jaxon Van Derbeken, Chronicle Staff Writer

Tuesday, August 21, 2001

San Francisco -- A hotel room in San Francisco's
North Beach area was found smeared with blood
and excrement after a bizarre double-shooting
during the weekend that left two brothers from
Washington state on life support, investigators said
yesterday.

The brothers, Brock Baker, 25, and Jason Baker,
24, both of Greenacres, Wash., were found by
hotel workers at midday Saturday in a first-floor
room at the Travelodge at 1201 Columbus Ave.

Blood and excrement had been smeared on the
walls. Jason Baker was found on a bed, shot in the
head.

Brock Baker, who authorities said has a criminal
record for drug possession in Washington, had been
shot in the face. Police found him taking a shower
with his shirt on and talking incoherently.

After he resisted, police eventually pulled him from
the shower and handcuffed him. Both brothers were
taken to San Francisco General Hospital, where
officials said they were being kept alive on life
support.

The brothers had driven to San Francisco from
Greenacres, a suburb of Spokane, on Friday in their
parents' 1994 Jeep.

Authorities said the two, accompanied by a third
man, went to the Travelodge about 9:30 p.m.
Friday. One of the men said he was 18 years old
and asked for a student discount, but did not have a
credit card, authorities said.

In the end, Jason Baker came in and paid the $190
room rate in cash.

At 11 p.m., the hotel clerk heard a scream but
thought it came from the street, police said. The
husband of the manager said he went to the vending
machines at 3 a.m. Saturday and heard a man
screaming, but like the clerk did not call police.

Police Inspector Joe Pieralde declined to discuss
many of the details of the case other than to say that
the "room was in some sort of disarray."

Pieralde said police were searching for the brothers'
companion, a short- haired, clean-shaven man. He
was described as about 18 years old, 5 foot 7, with
a thin build.
