weighted dips

New member
tried doing them today and my sternum felt like it was going to break or something. very painful....any reason for this? I think i might have bruised it recently in football but dont remember...

Any other good exercises i could do for tris?

My sternum has actually popped while doing weighted dips. It wasn't too pleasent. I have to warm up slow with dips and I make sure to keep my head and chest up throughout the lift. This helps me with the sternum discomfort.

I find I can do dips very easily, both triceps dips and chest dips...I use 60 lbs dumbells between legs for reps.

I haven't done dips for ages, but its one of my best exercises. 5 reps of deep dips (below elbow and as far as flexibiltiy permits) with 50kilos attached - not kidding. My chest is very disproportionately strong to the remainder of my body for whatever reason (can bench > 2x shoulder press for eg). I don't get any joint pain from it either

you're doing the dips with elbows out and all the way down, right?

good job on the 50 lbs x 5 reps :D

sounds like an injury....I know there is nothing as effective as the weighted dips but if you must you could do them on two benches (assuming you are doing them for triceps only). Hands on one bench, heels on another, plates on your lap - take them down as far as you can possibly go while keeping your back as close to the bench as possible and your elbows going straight back (no chicken wings).

Narrow grip presses and overhead extensions (using a weighted bar with narrow grip) are also good alternatives.

There are so many MORE effective exercises. If you're not very what's the word, heavy, dips can be very easy and can be overrated.

I would rather do one of many more effective exercises. I do dips when I'm lazy, because I'm only 200 lbs at 5'8"....unlike dabuffguy or CEO who are over 220 lbs...

Yeah. But its 50kg not pounds (110lbs). My legs are behind the body to emphaise the pecs. I don't have strong tris at all or shoulders - its why I only feel bench in the chest

I don't do it anymore - it annoys straping all the weight to the chest, + its not part of the omega program.

I'd like to get back into heavy benching - was on 120kgx5 (264lbs) before omega, which at 71-72kg is not bad, particularly for just over a year of lifting. My Dad was a top judo player in his day, and could bench 150kg, so eventually I aim to get back to heavier lifting and beat him. As I said, apart from chins/pull ups, I'm much weaker on other exercises - but this was partly due to poor technique, which again I can pursue post oemga on squats

I love me some weighted dips. I weigh about 233 right now and my last time did 22 reps rest paused with 55 lbs hanging from my waist. It was my best effort so far. I thought my triceps were going to explode.

Another good method (this is what arnold did) is to go as far down as possible to achieve a massive stretch of the chest at the bottom, pause briefly, then explode up.

ALright so i think ill try the one with your feet on a bench in front of you and having a plate on your lap, we did those for football in high school and they were great.

MOst ive ever done is 70lbs for 10, with a belt and a 45 and 25 hanging on it, but thats when my sternum didnt hurt. I did 50 reps non weighted a couple months ago, and the other day i could only do 27, because of my sternum. I guess it just got bruised from football.

new pr on chest dips this week, strapped 120lbs to the waist and did 4. i love them

lol. i was training with my friend who was 240 and couldnt do dips but i just said he wasnt trying and i told him if i can do a rep with his bodyweight he has to stop being a bitch and do one. And i got 2 and he was pissed. lol

dips are to chest/upper body as squats are to legs/lower body. the way the chest fans out during a dip is not matched by many, if any, other upper body exercises.

Yeah.....thanks OneBreath for suggesting weighted dips in my "arms wont grow" thread a while back. Since then, my triceps have grown quite a bit and the strength gains are are amazing. When i do weighted dips, i make sure to keep my head and chest up as far as possible. This puts more stress on my tris and allows me to get a slow amazing stretch out of it. I started off with a 45lb plate; now im up to 110lbs for 6 reps. And most importantly....my arms are growing!!

lol that's awesome bro...good job

My sternum pops all the time. It's not a painful pop, more like poping your knuckles. Is this not natural? I've told my doctor about it and he didn't seem to interested. I'm also not a fan of my doctor tho and I need to find a better one.

Anyone experience this?
