Was University a waste of time?

I mean when you graduated and tried to get a job? Was going to university for 4, 5 or 6 years worth it? I'm not asking about the drinking, drugs, girls and all that fun stuff. I mean, when you got your diploma and your first payment for you loan was due, was it time and money well spent?

Either way, I want to hear if it was - prove it, what type of job do you have, same goes for anyone out there that is pissed off that the meet once a week for a wellfare cheque.

Lets hear some real complaining.

It took me 6 years to get out of school. If anyone is wonderng, I had a good time. Quite good time in university. Starting of as an C.A. or like a C.P.A. for all you Americans. Alright money in Accounting. But when I go to the bank, there are two fucking kids from my class working as bank tellers. What the fuck? That ain't worth 4 years, you can do that out of high school.

I sure hope f*cken not. I work my ass off here, I hope it wont be wasting my time. Sure people can get high paying jobs without a degree, but it just helps things out if you do have a degree.

About the 20k, well, do you think your education was worth that investment? If you can pay it back in a couple years then you are good, you'll be making good money( I guess) with a degree.

There are a lot (most in fact) of positions that would not be available to you if you didn't have the degree. You can always refinance the student loans.

Unless you come up with some great idea and can get it financed or happen inherit the family business, or you are happy working a blue collar job, then I'd stick with school. Your chances of success and more $ increase exponentially just by having that little piece of paper on the wall that says you went to school.

college rules, I am sure everyone is aware of the Motley Crue song "Girls Girls Girls"

hahah, yeah

Yeah but guess what, when you are $20k in debt and making $25k per year--you won't have any money for girls, girls, girls.......... :chomp:

I graduated college and now work in the construction buissness. It's a blue collar job, has absolutley nothing to do with college, but the pay is beatiful...college made me a more well rounded citizen, though it has helped me zero work wise...

You can have a master's and wind up working at Mc Donalds. On the other hand, I know a guy who graduated high school, worked two years for a health admin. certificate, and immediately got hired making $90K a year. No bullshit, he's 21 and he's set.

It depends what you put into it, how you can apply it, and the opportunities you can find.

some degrees are worthless for jobs.

i.e. psych, history, english

if you study something that is in the... how do I put it.. at least in the path of what people go to get higher degrees for, it has a better chance of helping you get a job as those fields usually have a higher potential for advancement. There are always exceptions, but stuff like:

i.e. business, pre-med, political science (pre-law)

exactly VG is correct.. a lazy person will not acomplish much with or without a degree.

I'm not finished with school yet, but even I know I'm like someone said above...a more rounded person for going to college. Which is worth something I suppose.

Good question............one still has to make good decisions if they want financial renumeration.

Best thing one can do I think is get those summer intern jobs at a company they might like to work for. Don't be late and blend in well.

Motivation is good but determination is better.

for most people it is worthless.

Sadly, the effeect of more people going to school is increasing the value of an elite degree (Harvard, Princeton) while de-valuing theirown.

But Matt, aren't you generalizing towards your expertise of Higher Degrees (upon which I have the utmost respect for)? Surely you can't argue with the statistics of GED grads vs. 4-year college attendees? there is a clear distinction

I have no degree and only three of my friends make more money than I do. One of whom also lacks a degree, but is self employed and pulls about $110K/year. The other two are a teacher and doctor, respectively, and while they both make excellent salaries, they also have $80,000 in student loans between them.

Most other people I know with degrees also have massive debts that will take years to pay off, and generally work in fields unrelated to their degree program.

I personally don't think university is a scam, but ONLY if you're going in to a profession where a degree is a requirement for the job -- i.e.: law, medicine, rocket science, etc.

Both my parents are university professors, and even they say that university isn't worth what it used to be. To many grads have flooded the market with cheap degrees...

Bill Gates never finished the university.... He left from Harvard looking for the money and now he is the richest man on earth

what can I say about it? Anyway... I graduate in three months

I hope my degree and my motivation helps me to obtain at least a small fraction of the Bill Gates' Fortune :)

VG is right on...a motivated person w/4 year degree can do well...
If a person used that same motivation for 4 years outside of college, it is quite possible they'd be better off. It all stems from creativity, and intuition.

4 year college grads on average earn a higher salary than non-grads, without a doubt.
