I don't agree with ya, Frac but each to their own.
After having lived through the terror of 9-11 I'm a different person than I used to be. I never felt a need for war before that, but now I feel quite differently.
I used to work in the WTC and through the days that followed 9-11 I felt the terror those people experienced as they were trying to escape the buildings. I was in a skyscraper when we had to evacuate due to a bomb threat. Inside I panicked not knowing if we'd make it out. During 9-11 I still had former co-workers and many friends still working there including my best friend. Hours went by before I heard from her and although I was relieved that SHE was ok, the terror still did not leave me for what everyone experienced. I later found out that my the company I used to work for had moved to the other building just that Monday and anyone that I'd worked with did not make it out because they were above where the plane hit.
I know that the only way to stop the sick fucks that think they are right in their screwed up actions such as 9-11 and in making chemical weapons is to get rid of the few in charge who warp the minds of others. It's a sad reality, but reality is what it is. I don't like war, but sometimes it seems to be the only solution when a peaceful resolution will not be adheared to. It's just like having someone come into my home and threaten to kill a member of my family...ordinarilly I wouldn't kill, but in that circumstance I wouldn't think twice. Having weapons of mass distruction at the hands of lying sadonistic pricks and doing nothing about it is just ignorant.
But we were not arguing the merits of the war. Though there are more considerations in terms of effects on geopolitics beyond the question of saddams' biological and chemcial weapons. If it is possible for these 'mobile bioweapons labs' to exist, they can exist anywhere! Not just in Iraq... point is, one should be concerned about the possible (and apparent) swell of terrorist ranks because of this drastically unpopular action, as well as the poor diplomacy skills of the Bush administration. Squandering all our 'soft power' and sympathy garnered from 9/11.... other countries are important to anti-terrorism effort! Etc etc.. but this isnt the time for this.
My point still stands, IMO we cannot morally shield our children from the realities of war all their lives, then they grow up like most my age, without concept of what war really is! - How is it acceptable to say that "while children may be in the process of being slaughtered somewhere, we will not show that to the puritans in America becuase it's not appropriate for Must See TV?"
It is ironic you mention the horror of September 11th, for many here this was the first real glimpse of war, and it is horrible! It should not be this way, in part this was IMO due to the public's ignorance of the world.
The conscripts are often followed by republican guard who will execute them if they do not fight -
Lastly, if everything goes well, this will, temporarily at least, be a positive outcome for the Iraqi people, let's hope it does go well, for them and our troops.
