contrary to popular wisdom, popping vitamin E or beta carotene pills will not reduce your chances of suffering a heart attack or stroke, and may in fact, be damaging your health - new research suggests.
--findings appear in tomorrows issue of The "Lancet" a prestigious British medical journal.
scientists conducted a review of 34 common vitamins and minerals.
U.S. scientists conducted analysis of 15 key studies involving hundreds of thousands of patients have concluded the pills do not help ward off cardiovascular disease. pills containing beta carotene in particular were linked to a .3% jump in cardiovascular deaths and a .4% increase in death from any cause by the end of the study. alll tests were conducted using the "recomemed dosage on the product".
quote from a doctor involved in the study -
"to many people pop pills to make up for bad dietary habits when they should be exercising more eating properly and losing weight"
quote from the study --
"vitamins were believed to improve heart health by preventing the oxidation of fat particles in the blood, which leads to hardening of the arteries. Initial lab results, animal studies, and a few human tests appeared to bolster that theory, but it was called into question when the results of a large, long term human study came in."
also reported that beta carotene - a source of vitamin A could damage health, saying it has been found to increase the risk of lung cancer developing in smokers and in people who have been heavily exposed to asbestos.
the results of this study appear in local and national papers today. anyone feel we should follow the message being put out by this study?
