When painting a room, say a living room, and having 1 wall painted X color (darker) and the other 2 walls + inside of arch painted Y color (slightly off white) .....

Is it better to have the accent wall the couch wall or the wall with the giant entertainment center?

Well, my house is a rectangle......entry is in the living room, so the outside wall has a door & 2 windows......the room has 2 long walls that continue to the DR, which I use as a home office, divided by a large archway....

Well I don't know the directions of the walls, but I'm going to assume here....

Door & windows on north walls.....couch on east, entertainment opposite on west....not really a south wall....more like an archway open into DR where there is no real DR use --> home office....

the size of the room matters... how big is the living room?

i think the inside of the arch should be different from the other walls, u need to define the space, and since the arch is basically the division to the home office u should have that a different color.

what I would do, keep the off white color inside of the arch and paint the living room in one color (the dark one) if your living room is not big actually the dark color is gonna make look bigger, because adds depth to the room (most people think that dark colors make the room small)... and also, the trim of the room should be in strong contrast with the wall, so dark walls very light color trim, could be off white too.

Hey thanks!! I was thinking of doing the trim in High Gloss white -- around the doors, windows, base & crown molding....

I was also considering painting one wall a dark-ish brown color and the other 2 walls a white with a tiny tint of brown (barely noticeable) and the inside of the arch the same white color....

I just don't know whether to paint the wall behind the couch the dark color or the wall behind the TV -- the TV & entertainment center take up most of the wall.....

You may also want to paint the arch wall that leads into the dining room (perpendicular to the sofa wall) the same color as the above color.

What colors have you picked out?

My favorite whites from BJ Moore are white dove and china white - I will often use china white on the trim and doors and white dove on the ceilings.

I would do the inside of the arcd the same as the trim in the room.

I wouldn't go to crazy in changing the color of your molding if you are only going to paint that room. I would repaint in a similiar color but in a different finish. (just a note - gloss in making a come back of sorts.) I would go for semi gloss if you want some shine if you really want high gloss make sure all the surfaces are perfect it shows everything.

For the walls: If the walls have no blemishes or you intend to fix any it might be nice to use an eggshell finish - if not stick with flat. (eggshell looks really bad if the wals aren't perfect)

That's off the top of my head for now.

The trim around the windows & doors as well as the crown molding will be a high-gloss bright white....

The accent wall , I was thinking like a cafe-au-lait or a cocoa color.....then the other walls will be white with a brown tint -- but barely enuf to notice....

I also want to put laminate floor down instead of carpet....

Would it look stupid to just have carpet on the steps but not in the rooms & hallway?

Like manchester or grant with alexandria or davenport accent.

I just saw this house with high gloss wainscoting and OMG it looked so hot with the softest light cool grey walls. GRRRRRRR yummy

I'd love to come over - I love this stuff.
I'm painting the spare room today a warm light grey color that my painter friend gave me from a job.

Behr paint has some nice colors too.

BJ Moore has the little sample buckets that you can paint a 24" x 24" sample on your wall if you can't decide.

Donald Kaufman and Farrow Ball or my favorite paints but they are more $$ (40-80 per gallon rather then 20-30) and a pain to get out here in the boonies.

I'm thinking of getting rid of the love seat & replacing it with a chair + ottoman then recovering the couch....maybe with a brown-ish color....


I also have a middle bedroom that has nothing in it --> challenge!

Oh and I'd loooove to see what you think about my bathroom -- it is soooo tiny & I have no ideas on what to do with it....
